이 연구는 신동엽의 시극 「그 입술에 파인 그늘」이 갖는 문학사적 의의와 그 특질을 살펴보자는 것이다. 이 작품은 단순히 1960년대 <시극동인회>의 시극운동이라는 문화적 분위기에 편승해서 쓰여진 것이 아니다. 시인 자신의 생래적 이야기 의식에 의해 보다 적극적이고 능동적으로 쓰여진 작품이다. 이것은 우리나라의 외세에 의한 침탈의 역사와 한국전쟁의 참상 속에서 희생당하는 우리 민족의 자화상을 보여주고 있다. 주동인물인 남과 여는 그런 희생양의 모습이면서 동시에 민족의 근원적 생명력이라는 의미를 갖는다. 이 작품은 신동엽 시인의 다른 시들, 또는 오페레타 작품들과의 많은 관련성 속에서 그 의미의 깊이를 더한다. 뿐만 아니라, 신동엽의 모든 시가 갖는 의미의 집합체라고도 할 수 있다. 그러나 바로 이런 점이 시극 관객에게는 그 상징적 의미에 대한 이해를 어렵게 하는 원인이 되고 있다. 특히 인물에 대한 필요한 정보제공의 부족도 관객의 이해를 어렵게 하는 부분이다. 이 시극은 1960년대의 가장 대표적인 작품 중의 하나이다. 언제나 새로운 연출과 지속적인 공연으로 늘 다시 태어나는 계기가 만들어졌으면 한다.

The purpose of this study is to consider the meaning and the features about the history of literature in 「Shade Engraved in the Lips」. This work was not written for the cultural atmosphere such as a poetical drama movement by the “The Coterie of poetical Drama”. It was written actively and positively by epic consciousness which he naturally liked. It represents the Korean history despoiled by the power of a foreign country and our people sacrificed in the Korean war. The two main characters, a man and a woman, are such victims and our people's ultimate life force. It has the deeper meaning concerning other opereta works and poet Sin Dong-yeop's other poems. Also it is an aggregation of the meaning which his poem has. However such a feature makes the audience understand the symbolic meaning very hard. Expecially it is also hard for the audience to understand the work due to the insufficiency of characters' information. This poetic drama is one of representative works in 1960’s. I hope that it would be performed by the new dramatic interpretation in the days ahead.
