본 연구는 한국, 중국, 일본 등 동북아지역에서 전통가치의 근원을 이루어온 원시유교의 經世哲學을 현대적으로 해석해 보고 이것이 동북아 경제공동체형성에 어떠한 함의를 가질 수 있는가를 관찰하고 있다. 연구의 결과는 다음과같이 요약될 수 있다. 공자, 맹자, 순자에 의해 형성된 原始儒家의 경제사상은 德本財末 사상에 입각하고 있으며, 도덕사회를 이루기 위한 전제조건으로 백성의 民生安定을 도모하는데 주된 관심을 두고 있다. 따라서 원시유가에서는 도덕을 위해 경제를 경시한 것이 아니라 물자조달을 위한 경제행위를 중시하되 사회적 윤리에 어긋나지 않게 할 것을 요구했고, 개인보다 공동체 전체의 안정을 강조하였다. 물자의 생산이나 교환을 통해 개인적 이익을 취하더라도 정당하게 취하고(見利思義), 소비를 하더라도 개인의 극대만족을 위해서가 아니라 사회전체의 공존과 수급안정을 배려한 절제된 소비를 요구한다(節之以禮). 자연의 정복을 통한생산의 극대화가 아니라 자연의 순환 원리에 순응하여 생산, 소비를 조절할 것을 요구한다(天地人合一). 군왕은 스스로 절제하여 백성의 어려운 삶을 지원하는 백성위주의 정책이념을 구현하고자 했다(修己安人百姓). 한국, 중국, 일본 등의 동북아 유교권 국가들은 근대화 이전까지 이러한 윤리적, 자연친화적, 민본주의적 경제사상을 하나의 전통가치로 공유해 왔다. 따라서 이러한 전통가치를 현대적으로 재해석하고 이것을 공통분모로하여 지역공통의 정체성을 개발해 간다면 동북아지역은 자생적 연대감에 근거한 게마인샤프트(gemeinschaft)적 공동체를 만들어 갈 수 있을 것이다. 이 경우 동북아 공동체는 자본주의의 비윤리성과 비인간성을 보정할 수 있는 윤리적 소재를 공유하게 되며, 이를 통해 동북아는 世界體制 내에서 윤리적 시장질서의 창출을주도하는 중심부의 역할을 담당하게 될 것이다.
Northeast Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Japan employed Confucianism as the state ideology before the West came to East Asia in modern times. It affected social and economic behaviour and institutional structure in these countries. As a result, Northeast Asian countries have a similar cultural bases for their traditional life and their economic thought. In the face of new regionalism in East Asia, it is necessary to re-examine the Confucianism in order to develop a common cultural denominator that makes Northeast Asian countries gather into a regional community. The original Confucianism emphasized the obligation of the state to provide the economic well-being of the people. It stressed also equal distribution, co-existence with the disadvantaged in society and harmonized relation between human and nature. These thoughts of Confucianism can be interpreted as a source of modern economic democracy, economic ethics, and environment friendly economic policy in our days. Re-appreciation of these Confucian thoughts makes Northeast Asian countries to find a regional identity thanks to their similar emotion for their traditional values on the one hand. And it makes them to provide ethical materials to the capitalist market economy that lacks ethical aspects since the rise of neo-liberalism on the other hand. So, Northeast Asian community will be able to assume a leading role in creating new ethical economic order in the world economic system. These are the reasons why the original Confucianism should be re-examined in discussing the Northeast Asian economic community building .
