To prevent and treat child abuse, more effectively, practitioners, policy-makers and researchers need greater understanding of factors related to violence toward children. The present study was aimed to advance our understanding of the children's response to family violence as well as to examine the effect of family violence on the children's maladjustment. The study-subjects were 2nd grade middle school students (n=943) in Korea. Firstly, different adjustment problems were noted in children belong to each group. Children who were witnessed to marital violence as well as experienced violence committed to themselves revealed more maladjustment problems than the others. And children who are the victims or witnesses to violence in home are at risk for experiencing both emotional and behavioral problems some what at risk for impaired social functioning. Thus children experienced to family violence had severer maladjustment problems than non-experienced group. In particular, specific problems such as withdrawal were significantly confined to children who exposed to marital violence in home. There was significantly positive correlation between family violence and children's maladjustment. Thus for setting up an effective intervening social work program for these children experienced to family violence, it would be the first to understand the characteristics of family violence and to know children's problems related with family violence. In conclusion, social workers are encouraged to use a comprehensive assessment approach which addresses the nature of the children's experiences of family violence and a range of developmental outcomes.
