본 연구는 어머니의 취업여부 및 직종이 청소년 자녀의 국어‧영어‧수학성적에 미치는 영향력을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 한국청소년패널에서 수집된 중2패널을 사용하였으며, 어머니의 인구사회학적 특성과 가구의 구조적‧경제적 특성이 청소년의 학업성취 수준뿐만 아니라 어머니의 취업여부 및 직종 선택에 영향력을 미치는 공변인임을 고려하여 경향점수가중치 방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어나 수학성적에 비하여 국어성적은 공변인의 영향력을 덜 받는 영역이었다. 둘째, 전문직이나 기계조작직 어머니의 자녀는 이들 직종의 특성으로 인하여 다른 집단 어머니의 자녀에 비하여 영어나 수학성적을 낮게 평가하였다. 연구결과에 기초하여 어머니의 취업여부와 직종이 청소년의 학업성취 수준에 미치는 영향력에 대한 함의와 추후 연구를 제안하였다.
This study intended to analyze the effects of maternal employment - whether mothers had a job or not and which type of job they had - on the academic achievement of adolescents. For this purpose, the paper used data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS) and adopted a propensity score weight method. The main findings are as follows. First, the achievement levels of Korean language was less affected by the covariates compared with those of English or math. Second, the adolescents whose mothers were a professional or a machine operator evaluated their achievement levels lower than those from other groups. The implications based on these findings and the future studies were suggested.
