Although there has been much research on knowledge management and knowledge transfer, most literatures have been focused on issues related to the knowledge transfer process between partners within the context of strategic alliance or joint venture, but issue within an intra-MNE knowledge transfer has respectively received little attention Furthermore previous studies related to type of knowledge have been dominated by research on R&D, new product development (NPD), and marketing, but rarely on issues related to business know-how. This study empirically tried to find the issue as to what factors facilitate effectiveness of knowledge transfer to subsidiary. In order to address these research questions, this study explores both theoretically and empirically determinants of cross-border knowledge transfer from Korean multinational enterprises' parent to subsidiaries in a variety of foreign markets. Moreover, this study additionally explored the phenomena that a moderating effect between the levels of high and low of absorptive capabilities subsidiaries have in foreign markets. Based on a survey of the Korean subsidiaries located in overseas, cultural distance and psychic distance between headquarters and its subsidiaries evidently decrease the transferability of business know-how. In addition, the extent of autonomy of subsidiary significantly affects effectiveness of transfer of business know-how with a negative sign. On the other hand, a higher transferability of business know-how to subsidiaries occurs when the degree of organizational learning culture, commitment, and prior experience of the headquarters are higher. This study also sequentially verified that moderating effect of absorptive capabilities. As a result, this study demonstrated subsidiaries must have the capabilities to absorb inputs in order to generate output and without such a capacity, they cannot absorb, interpret, understand, and utilize the transferred knowledge of business know-how from headquarters.


본 연구는 한국다국적기업들을 대상으로 한국에 위치한 모회사와 해외 여러시장에 진출한 그들의 자회사간 비즈니스노하우 지식 이전에 관한 연구이다. 특히, 본 연구에서는 기존의 이전되는 지식의 대상을 R&D, NPD, 마케팅으로 제한하였다면 본 연구에서는 비즈니스 노하우에 초점을 두고, 지식이전의 효과성에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인들을 살펴보는 데에 그 목적을 두었다. 또한, 기존의 연구들이 합작투자나 전략적제휴와 같은 기업간지식이전에 연구초점을 두었다면 본 연구에서는 조직 내 즉, 본사와 해외자회사간 지식이전에서 그 현상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 아울러, 한국의 본사와 해외 여러 시장에 위치한 그들의 자회사간 지식이전에 의미있는 영향을 보일 것으로 기대되는 자회사 흡수역량의 조절효과를 추가적으로 검증하였다. 한편, 본 연구에서는 실제 문화적거리와 심리적거리가 지식이전에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 그 현상을 살펴보았다.
