In this paper, I will suggest the 'National Literature Discourse'. The term, the 'National Literature Discourse', is used to comprise the theory of national literature and that of nationalism of South Korea, and that of patriotism of North Korea which are thought to be literary theories that consider the Korean people, or reflect nationalism. This usage is intended to overcome the dichotomy, viewing National Literature and as a question of Progressive or Conservative. The attitude of regarding national literature, literature of nationalism, and that of patriotism as discourses is to deny the righteousness and the prerogative value of the national literature. This attitude is far from the attitude of evaluating national literature discourse schematically through the eye of theories of national literature which used to prevail in seventies and eighties, or simply reorganizing the history of national literature chronologically. Also examining literature theory of patriotism of North Korea, and comparing it to the discussions of literature and aesthetics of socialism has nothing to do with this attitude. Thus, this attitude is expected to be a critical scientific foundation on which both Korea's literature theories can be discussed and described without ranking literary works of both Korea in hierarchy by a specific view.
