박범신의 『은교』는 그동안 ‘늙음(나이 듦)’ 또는 노년의 욕망에 관한 서사로 해석되어왔다. 이는 영화 [은교]가 부각시킨 이미지와 논점 등이 원작을 해석하는 데 영향을 미친 결과로 보인다. 하지만 이 소설에서 ‘늙음’ 그 자체보다 중요한 것은 ‘젊음/늙음’의 대립구조 안에서 ‘젊음(영원한 청년)’이 지닌 상징적 의미와 여기에 투영된 작가의 예술관이다. 이 점은 박범신 소설의 낭만주의적 지향과도 깊은 관련이 있다. 이 같은 문제의식 아래 이 논문에서는 『은교』에 나타난 ‘젊음’의 상징성을 박범신의 예술관과 작가의식의 측면에서 살펴본다. 이 과정에서 이 글은 특히 박범신의 자전적 성장소설인 『더러운 책상』과의 연관성에 주목한다. 『더러운 책상』은 시적 직관, 예술적 천재성, 영원성과 시간의 초월, 죽음 또는 자기 살해 충동, 세속성에 대한 혐오 등과 같은 키워드를 『은교』와 공유하는 소설로, 박범신의 낭만주의적 예술관에서 ‘젊음’이 상징하는 바가 무엇인지를 분명하게 보여준다. 이 두 편의 소설은 또한 분열된 자아들의 긴장과 갈등, 그리고 상징적 통합에의 비전 등을 통해 자신의 정체성을 재정립하려는 박범신의 작가적 모색을 담고 있다. 이 글에서는 이처럼 분열된 자아들이 죽음 또는 자기 살해를 통해 상징적 통합에 이르는 과정을 추적하고, 여기에 투영된 박범신의 자의식과 작가적 욕망을 검토한다. 이 같은 관점은 『은교』를 ‘박범신 소설로서’ 더 잘 이해하게 해주는 한편, ‘갈망의 삼부작’(『촐라체』, 『고산자』, 『은교』) 등에 나타난 박범신 소설의 낭만주의적 성격을 조명하는 데에도 의미 있는 시사점을 제공할 것이다.
This paper looks into the writer's consciousness and the view of art by analyzing the symbolic meaning of youth and the feature of 'divided self' in En-gyo. Especially it focuses on the relation to A Dirty Desk, autobiographical bildungsroman of Park, Bum-shin. A Dirty Desk has a lot of key words in common with En-gyo, such as poetic intuition, artistic genius, eternity, transcendence, death drive or suicidal impulse, and hatred of secularity etc. And this novel shows clearly what youth symbolize in Park, Bum-shin's works. A Dirty Desk and En-gyo also grope for author's identity through the struggle and tension between his divided selves. So in this paper, we read En-gyo and A Dirty Desk together, and examines the opponent structure of 'youth/aging', 'soul/flesh', 'eternity/temporality', and 'the artistic/the secular' in these novels. In result, it proves that the eternal youth in the old poet(Lee, Jeok-yo) means both immortal soul of art and his authentic self in En-gyo. And his love of En-gyo signifies writer's desire for reviving his own eternal youth, recovering his first purity. Also the conflict of Lee, Jeok-yo and Seo, Ji-woo shows the writer's inner division between artistic and worldly desire. If Lee, Jeok-yo is the writer's persona and present self, Seo, Ji-woo is another self(his shadow) as a bestselling author in the past denied by himself. This paper analyzes the process to symbolic unification of his divided selves by killing another self, and the writer's desire and romantic inclination in En-gyo.
