이 논문은 정조 순조 연간의 학자인 徐有가 어떠한 성격의 학문을 전개했는지를 고찰하였다. 그의 저술 林園經濟志를 구체적으로 분석하여 그의 학술이 利用厚生의 문제를 집중적으로 조사하고 고찰한 것이었음을 밝혔다. 서유구는 18세기 利用厚生派의 학설을 계승하여 구체적이고 방대하게 그 학문적 장점을 구현한 학자였다. 이용후생학의 계승과 발전이라는 시각에서 서유구의 학문을 이해하는 것이 189세기 실학의 전개를 이해하는데 매우 유효한 방법이 될 것으로 예상한다. 서유구의 이용후생학은 인간의 의식주 생활을 윤택하게 영위하는 厚生에 목표를 두고 다양한 利用의 도구와 방안을 모색하였다. 그는 여기에 그치지 않고 문화생활과 여가생활의 개념까지 접목하였다. 결론적으로, 서유구는 일반 백성의 피부에 닿는 생활현실, 日用의 삶을 개선하고 개혁하는 것을 지향하여, 독자적인 학문체계를 구축하였다.
Promotion of Public Welfare in Imwon'kyeongjeji by Seo Yu-gu攀* Professor, Dept., Korean Language & Literature of Myongji University攀攀Ahn, Dae-Hoe*This paper looks into the characteristics of the study by Seo Yu-gu, who was a scholar under the reign of King Jeongjo and King Sunjo. Through the specific analysis of his book, Imwon'kyeongjeji, I investigate that his writing focused on the 'promotion of public welfare'. Seo Yu-gu was the scholar who established his voluminous academic world by succeeding to the theory of the school pursuing the promotion of public welfare in the eighteenth century. To illuminate Seo Yu-gu's learning within the framework of the succession and flourishing of the 'promotion of public welfare' will be useful in understanding the development of practical science in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.Seo Yu-gu's study grouped for various methods and plans to promote the public welfare, aiming at the improvement of the living conditions. Furthermore, he put a graft into the cultural and leisure life. Finally. Seo Yu-gu constructed the original academic system by seeking for the renovation of daily life down to earth.
