본고는 홍길주의 선비로서의 삶을 추적하여 그 실체를 드러내고 구체화하는 데 주된 목적을 두었으며, 논의의 집중도를 높이기 위해 ‘경전에 통달하고, 행실을 닦으며, 문장으로 우익하는 선비로서의 모습’보다는 이용후생, 그 중에서도 ‘醫藥을 통한 백성 구제’에 초점을 맞추었다. 의약에 대한 홍길주의 관심은 이른 시기부터 시작되어 다방면으로 확장되었는데, 현재 많은 기록이 그의 문집 속에 남아 전한다. 홍길주는 가난한 백성들이 의약의 혜택을 고루 받을 수 있도록 하기 위해 단방과 일상의 약재에 대해 일찍부터 관심을 가졌고, 예방과 조리의 중요성을 늘 강조하였으며, 인술을 바탕으로 의원을 경계하는 것도 잊지 않았다. 이헌명, 상득용, 임덕경 등 의술을 가진 주변 인물들과 교유하며 격려하고 지원했던 데서 확인이 가능하다. 더하여 숙수념이란 가상공간을 통해 三事를 구현해내면서 의약에도 주요 자리를 할애하였다. 용수원이 바로 그것인데, 이 용수원은 지금의 비영리 의료 기관격으로 ‘의약을 통한 민생 복리 증진’라는 홍길주의 이상을 완벽하게 구현한 가상공간이다. 홍길주가 보여준 이용후생은 이론적 체계를 제대로 갖추지는 못했지만, 실천적이란 점에서 유의미한 가치를 가진다. 비록 의약을 학적 차원으로까지 끌어 올리지는 못했지만, 의약을 매개로 이루어진 현실인식과 그 현실인식에서 비롯된 다양한 실천 행위 및 상상으로 구현된 이상은 그 자체로도 의미를 가질 뿐만 아니라 각각이 유기적으로 결합하여 새로운 의미를 생산하고 있기 때문에 방점을 찍을 필요가 있다.
This paper is written for pursuing Hong Gilju’s life as a scholar. Also this paper’s aims are to indicate and embody reality of his life. To raise concentration level of this paper, I concerned about rather Riyonghusaeng, especially saving peoples with medicine than features of a scholar such as mastering scriptures, improving behavior and doing the movement of the right. Hong Gilju’s interest on medicine begun from his early life and expanded to various fields. His works include recordings of his interest on medicine. To receive benefit of medicine for poor peoples, Hong Gilju had interests on a single-medicine prescription and medicinal herbs of daily life from his early life. He always emphasized significance of prevention and care. Also he didn’t forget to guard against doctors based on medicine. This fact can be confirmed by that he interchanged, encouraged and supported neighboring people having medical practice such as Lee Hunmyung, Sang Deukyong and Lim Deokkyung. Furthermore, as realizing Samsa through virtual space called Suksunyem, he spared main parties to medicine. This was Yongsuwon which was a nonprofit medical institution in now. It was virtual space perfectly realized Hong Gilju’s ideal, ‘enhancement of peoples’ welfare with medical practice’. Riyonghusaeng showed by Hong Gilju didn’t have theoretical basis, but it had value meanings in fulfill. Although this thought couldn’t raise medicine to scientific level, it had significance meanings itself in that it consisted of reality awareness, various behaviors from the reality awareness and building ideal based imagination. Also each of them combined each other and they made new meaning, so we need to emphasize.
