의료시장의 개방과 함께 급속한 변화를 맞이하는 의료분야에서 비서의 개념과 역할을 정립하기 위하여 현직 의사와 의료비서 역할을 수행하는 실무 종사자들이 기대하는 의료비서의 역할과 업무를 파악하고자 하였다. 주요결과를 보면 첫째, 의료비서의 가장 중요한 역할은 ‘환자관리자’였으며 업무로는 검사 및 진료의 예약 스케쥴과 진행사항 설명 등이었다. 반면 의사 개인의 출장준비와 수행, 경조사 관련 등의 의사의 비서로서의 역할은 중요도가 가장 낮게 나타났다. 둘째, 의료비서의 역할수행을 위한 역량 중요도에서는 인성적 자질, 행정/고객관리 능력, 기술적 능력, 지적 능력의 순으로 파악되었다. 셋째, 개인병원에서는 환자를 관리하는 역할이 가장 중요하게 파악되었으며 종합병원에서는 학회자료, 보고서, 공문서, 메일 등의 문서를 작성하는 등의 의사를 보좌하는 개인비서의 역할이 중요하게 나타났다.병원간의 경쟁이 치열해짐에 따라 의료기술과 의료시설의 고급화, 차별화와 더불어 환자를 고객으로 서비스하고 효율적인 병원관리를 지원할 수 있는 인력이 요구되고 있다. 최근 이러한 필요에 따라 의료비서는 단순히 서비스 교육을 받거나 간호사, 치위생사 등의 본래의 의료업무가 있는 의료 인력이 접근하는 것보다는 조직전체와 경영자를 경영관리적인 측면에서 보좌 지원하는 것을 기본으로 서비스와 마케팅을 발휘할 수 있는 비서로서의 역할 수행이 가장 적합하다고 본다. 따라서 의료비서는 고객으로서 환자에 대한 서비스, 의사에 대한 보좌, 조직의 행정관리 업무 등을 통하여 병원조직의 효율적인 관리와 경영에 기여할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 의료비서에 대한 인식과 필요를 높이는 계기를 마련하였으며 의료비서의 업무향상을 위한 지침으로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 또한 의료비서 양성을 위한 학과개설과 재교육을 위한 교육적 기초자료로 제공할 수 있을 것이다.


The main purpose of this study is to define and discuss the role and duties of the medical secretary. By investigating related researches and conducting a survey to doctors and medical secretaries, the role of medical secretary, importance of medical secretary's duty and competency were defined. The major findings are as follows; First, importance of the duty of medical secretary are high. On the medical secretary's work, the role of 'patient manager' is the most highly required: On the other hand, the role of 'doctor's secretary' is the most lowly demanded. Second, the medical secretary is required to have more of administration/customer management capability and attitude than knowledge and skill. 'Sense of responsibility' is the highest required ability followed by 'service mind' and 'confidentiality'. 'Physiology' is the lowest required ability followed by 'anatomy' and 'foreign language'. Third, there are major differences between the clinic and the hospital in terms of the medical secretary's important duty and important competency. In the clinic, role of patient management, and abilities of 'sense of responsibility', 'service mind', and 'personal relations' are required. However, in the hospital, role of doctors' secretary, and abilities of 'sense of responsibility', 'accuracy', and 'speediness' are highly rated. The society's demand for the medical secretary is high. Moreover with opening foreign medical business market in 2004, the recognition and the demand for the medical secretary will be increased nationally. This study can be used in developing a re-training program for the medical secretary or as the groundwork for opening a new course. Moreover, specialized secretary's request would open up the broaden job opportunities and territories.
