This study aims at explaining the relationship between a facility's topological characteristics and a visitor's spatial cognition in tourism destination from an interpretive approach. To achieve the goals of the study, a literature review on the tourism facility, topological characteristics and spatial cognition was undertaken in order to build a theoretical foundation. The study was conducted on Nami Island, which proved to be an adequate subject for measuring both topological characteristics and spatial cognition. The results of the study detail a relationship between a facility's topological characteristics and a visitor's spatial cognition. These results are in accordance with the general perspective in architecture and urban design, considering that topological characteristics influence spatial cognition. However, some tourism destination facilities showed a negative relationship. Especially, the results of the study revealed the main tourism factors which influence the relationship between topological characteristics and spatial cognition are attraction, culture, symbolism, convenience, and experience. This study suggests integral considerations of facility locations and types for planning and managing tourism facilities.
