‘한국 사회학’에서 ‘젠더 연구’ 혹은 ‘페미니즘’을 한다는 것은 어떠한 의미일까? 이는 페미니스트로서 ‘사회학’을 하는 것과 사회학자로서 ‘페미니즘’을 한다는 것 사이의 의미의 경합 지대에 놓인다는 점에서 역설적으로 한국에서 ‘여성학하기’란 무엇인가에 대한 질문이기도 하다. 이러한 질문은 또한 한국에서 ‘사회학/여성학’이라는 다른 학제적 위치에 놓인 ‘페미니스트들’에게 갖는 복합적인 지위나 의미, 역할에 대한 물음이므로, 공동체로 상상되는 ‘우리=페미니스트들’의 실천과 실체에 대한 성찰이 요구되는 지점이기도 하다. 본 논문은 현재 사회학이라는 학제 안에 소속되어 있으면서 ‘여성학, 젠더 연구, 혹은 페미니즘’을 하고 있다고 스스로 평가하는 학문후속세대들의 경험을 통해 사회학 안에서 ‘젠더하기, 페미니즘하기, 혹은 여성학하기’의 의미를 알아보고자 했다. 결론적으로 사회학이라는 학제 안에서 각기 다른 중첩적인 위치와 맥락에 놓인 페미니스트 학문후속세대들은 자신들의 문제제기를 타자화하거나 배제하는 일상적이고 학문적인 제도이자 구조로서 ‘사회학’을 경험한다. 동시에, 사회학을 자신들의 삶의 맥락에 위치시키며, 페미니즘을 비롯한 학문적 관심과 문제의식이 기반한 학문적 실천과 지향, 열망의 장소로 재구축하고 있었다. 이들은 ‘사회학’ 안에 있는 듯하지만, 실제로는 사회학/여성학이라는 경계와 늘 협상하면서 페미니스트 유제와 네트워크를 통해 ‘살아 낼’ 힘을 얻고 있었다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 궁극적으로 학제간 경계의 작동 방식과 규율 효과를 드러내고, 경계를 넘는 페미니스트 학문 공동체의 가능성을 모색하고자 한다.
What does it mean to do gender studies or feminism in sociology? This paper analyzes the ways of disciplining women and feminist studies in the academic field of sociology in South Korea, particularly focusing on graduate students' experiences. Based upon in-depth interviews with graduate students, so-called younger generation of academia, this paper explores 1) where and how female students in sociology encounter and negotiate the diverse boundaries between/among theory/practice, sociology/women's studies, male/female, and masculinity/ femininity; 2) how and why women and feminist knowledge are discriminated and excluded by the 'inner circle' who has the arrogant perception; 3) in the process, how female students identify themselves and under what condition; and 4) what is the implication of the women's experiences, who are alienated and deauthorized in the field of sociology/women's studies, but (re)constitute themselves feminist sociologist 'rebel' against androcentric norms inside/outside sociology. Ultimately, this paper seeks to expose the function of the boundaries between disciplines throughout the positionality of young feminist sociologists, and examines a possibility to construct a feminist community beyond disciplinary boundaries.
