This paper attempts to investigate syntactic and semantic properties of theKorean comparative construction. It has been noted that Korean only permitsphrasal comparatives involving a relative clause headed by kes. Since there areno clausal comparatives, it has been predicted that degree comparison is notavailable. However, in some cases, the comparison of degrees is possible inKorean. In this paper, I propose that a Korean pota-comparative sentenceinvolves a relative clause headed by kes denoting either an individual ordegree. In this way, a pota-comparative sentence can express the comparison ofdegrees when kes denotes degrees such as ‘height’ or ‘length’.
