This article uses a critical approach to examine the content of two news websites. The results are presented as follows. First, The Times publishes more hard news, including foreign news, in comparison to Chosun‐ilbo. However, The Times includes a degree of ‘softness’ in its hard news coverage, so we consider the possibility that the truth is distorted in some of its published content. Second, the two websites do not fully utilize the capabilities of a web‐based news platform. In this respect, these media outlets do not fulfil the expectations of readers in regards to journalism. Third, The Times website plays a stronger role in agenda‐setting for certain issues than Chosun‐ilbo website. As some critics have argued, being the sole distribution outlet for foreign news gives media the opportunity to offer a biased view of the world.
이 논문은 한국과 영국의 대표적인 두 개 뉴스 웹사이트(온라인 신문)의 뉴스 콘텐츠를 비판적으로 비교 분석하였다. 분석결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영국의 더 타임즈는 조선일보와 비교했을 때 해외뉴스를 포함한 경성뉴스 장르가 많았다. 하지만, 분석결과에 따르면, 더타임즈는 경성뉴스에서 뉴스 연성화 현상이 나타남으로써 경성뉴스의 원래의 특성이 왜곡될 수있는 뉴스구조를 갖고 있다. 둘째, 분석대상 두 개의 뉴스 웹사이트는 온라인 뉴스의 장점(상호작용성과 즉시성 등)을 충분히 살리지 못하고 있음을 나타냈다. 따라서 저널리즘 관점에서 분석대상 두 개의 온라인신문은 뉴스 이용자의 기대에 충분히 부응하고 있다고 볼 수 없다. 셋째, 분석결과에 따르면, 더 타임즈는 조선일보보다 해외 이슈와 관련하여 국제적인 의제형성에 더욱 영향력을 갖고 있다. 하지만, 이것을 비판적인 관점에서 논의할 때, 실제적인 분석결과에 따르면 더 타임즈에서 대표적인 경성뉴스 장르인 해외뉴스에서도 뉴스의 연성화 현상이 나타남으로써 전세계 해외뉴스에 대한 왜곡현상도 만들어 낼 수 있음을 생각해 볼 수 있다.
