This article investigates the Korean learning materials published by non-native speakers of Korean on Korean language from the late 19th century until the early 20th century. The study focuses on the twelve Korean learning books published for the period of eighty years from 1877 till 1965. An in-depth analysis of the twelve books were conducted on the four different areas and they are the overall contents of the books, the instructional language, the topics and the amount of texts included. It was observed that the twelve books can be classified into two different categories and they are the conversation-focused and the grammar-focused, Books written in the late 19th century were observed to be written for the purpose of conducting a simple everyday conversation with Koreans and the remaining books were observed to be written for the purpose of giving a thorough understanding on the Korean grammar.
