This thesis is an attempt to elucidate the concept of personality in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism. In the literary criticism of the 1930s, Choi Jae-Seo looked for a synthetic view between a social criticism and aesthetic criticism. Instruction and pleasure, science and literature, classicism and romanticism are oppositional ideas in the tradition of literary discussion, but they are treated as compatible notions in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism. Theory of personality in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism is in accord with his synthetic critical view. Choi Jae-Seo regards the dispute on personality as one of the most important issues in modern criticism. Because Choi Jae-Seo considered that modern criticism would have to redefine the concept of personality which had been emphasized by Romanticism of the 19th century. Choi Jae-Seo insisted that the personality, in modern criticism, was not `romantic personality` but `personality as the principle of creation`/ The core of Choi`s concept of `personality as the principle of creation` is the universality of personality. Choi Jae-Seo criticized romantic personality seriously, because it was confined to the individual intolerant subjectivity. The genuine personality in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism is the eye to see the world without a distorted view beyond the narrow-minded subjectivity of the self, and it is the mind to perceive concrete facts without prejudice. The concept of personality in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism means the absolute subjectivity or the aesthetic subjectivity that is beyond the subjectivity of rational subject operating in the dichotomy of subject and object. The imagination and the culture which were very stressed in Choi Jae-Seo`s criticism are the conceptual apparatus to unite the personality with the universality. The imagination is the ability to unite the various empirical phenomena-sense, reason, emotion, feeling, etc - to personality, and the culture opens the personality to the mind of introspection and transcendence, not to be limited to the self.
