근대전환기의 다양한 매체 가운데 학회지는 지금까지 많은 부분 연구에서 소외되어왔다고 할 수 있다. 그 이유 가운데 하나는 ‘신소설’과 ‘애국계몽소설’ 등의 명칭처럼 다른 성격의 작품들을 과도하게 하나의 묶음으로 구성하려는 연구 태도가 지닌 한계에서 비롯되었다고 생각한다. 만일 근대전환기의 문학 양식의 혼재 양상이 ‘양식’으로 소급되는 것이 아니라 ‘양식’을 탐구하는 과정이라 이해한다면 이 같은 한계를 극복할 가능성은 열린다. 그것은 단순히 기존의 대상들을 반복하여 재해석하는 것이 아니라 그 연구 대상의 폭을 넓히는 것이다. 본고에서는 이를 위한 연구 태도는 당대에 발표되거나 출간된 모든 매체에 실린 글들을 면밀히 분석하는 것이라고 생각하여, 그 방법적 시론으로서 근대전환기 학회지에 수록된 글들을 대상으로 ‘서사체’라는 개념을 활용하는 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과 근대전환기 학회지의 글들에는 다양한 ‘서사체’가 서술 방법으로 수용되고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. ‘문답체’, ‘연설체’, ‘우화체’, ‘우의체’, ‘일대기체’ 등이 그것들이다. 이 가운데 ‘문답체’, ‘연설체’, ‘우의체’ 등은 단순히 목적성이 강한 글에서 설득력을 높이기 위해 사용된 부분적 방법론으로 그치는 것이 아니라 양식적 독립 가능성을 충분히 내포한 것이라 판단할 수 있었다. 추후 필자는 본 연구를 근대전환기의 모든 매체에 실린 글들을 대상으로 ‘서사체’의 접목 가능성을 타진해 보는 후속 연구의 기초로 삼도록 하겠다.
Few studies have been made on the journals in the transition period to modern era. One of the reasons is that many studies tend to take the approach of grouping different types together. For example, "new novel (shin-soseol)" and "patriotic and enlightenment novel" are put into one category. However, such limitation could be overcome if the mixture of types is a part of the process to explore literature types in this period. There is a need for the expansion of subjects, not the reinterpretation of existing ones: a thorough analysis on all published writings during the period. In this paper, analyses on the journals are made utilizing the concept of "narrative style". The result shows that various narrative styles are used in them: question-answer, speech, fable, allegorical, and biographical styles. Question-answer, speech, and allegorical forms, in particular, are not just partially used to make writings more persuasive. Rather, they show the potential to become a style which characterizes a whole writing. This paper will serve as a basis for a follow-up study to examine narrative style targeting all published writings in the transition period.
