본고에서는 박태원의 월북 후 달라진 문학적 변모 양상을 살펴보고, 『갑오농민전쟁』의 문학적 성격을 규명하고자 한다. 그의 작가적 생애는 단순한 구분이나마 크게 월남하기 전과 후로 구분하여 나눠볼 수 있다. 월북하기 전 그의 주된 관심사는 일반 서민들의 세태생활에 관한 것으로, 평범한 일상인들의 생활 단면에 관해 관심을 갖고 작품화하고 있다. 그가 역사소설에 관심을 갖게 된 것은 해방 직후로, 역사전기소설을 발표했으나 당시에는 아직 뚜렷한 역사관을 확립하지 못한 상태다. 그의 역사소설은 월북 후에야 본격적으로 이뤄지게 되었는데, 월북과 함께 북한에서 새로운 문학적 전환을 맞게 된다. 역사소설을 집필하면서 박태원은 동학혁명 지도자인 전봉준을 문학작품 가운데 형상화하고자 노력했다. 따라서 전봉준을 자신의 첫 작품 주인공으로 설정한 것이다. 그는 계급의식과 애국주의를 고양시키기 위해 『갑오농민전쟁』가운데 계급투쟁의 혁명적 인물을 형상화하고 있다. 특히, 작중의 시대상황을 계급사회로 구분, 착취계급과 피착취계급으로 양분화하고 있다. 따라서 『갑오농민전쟁』은 변혁 주체를 봉건/반봉건, 양반 지주세력/농민층이라는 이분법적 대결 구도로 설정하고 있다. 작품의 일차적 갈등은 착취계급과 피착취계급의 투쟁으로, 봉건계층을 대변하는 양반층과 반봉건계층을 대변하는 서민층의 대결로 압축된다. 또한, 이 작품은 혁명적 대중인물의 영웅화를 시도하고 있다. 『갑오농민전쟁』은 대중적 인민들의 현실적인 문제들을 해결하고자 노력하고 있다. 현실적 문제해결을 위해 인민 출신인 주인공을 민중적 영웅으로서 형상화하고 있다. 주인공 전봉준과 오상민은 주제의식인 <척왜척양>과 <보국안민>의 구호 아래 애국자의 전형이자 영웅적으로 형상화하고 있다. 역사소설 『갑오농민전쟁』은 역사적 사실의 예술적 일반화를 보여주고 있다. 작품의 주제의식은 일관되게 사적유물주의 혹은 유물사관을 바탕으로 하고 있으며 계급적 대립과 투쟁을 통하여 계급의식 혹은 사회주의 이념을 형상화하고 있다.

We search Park Tae Won' changed literature aspect and investigate literary nature after deter to North Korea in this paper. We divide his life of a writer before and after deter to North Korea. He is interested in the lineaments of the tims of the commonality before deter to North Korea. He is interested in a historical novel after 8.15 emancipation and changed a new literature phenomenon after deter to North Korea. He embodys revolutionary character to class sciousness because Park Tae Won' 『Gapo unrising of the peasants』 boosts class strife and chauvinism to class conflict. Also, he heroizes the revolutionary public person in this work. Park Tae Won realistics problems of the commonality through 『Gapo unrising of the peasants』 And he demonstrates artistic generalization of a historical fact in a historical novel, 『Gapo unrising of the peasants』. Finally, there are the materialistic conception of history as a thematic of work. And he is eloquent class-consciousness or socialist ideas through the class conflict and struggle class strife.
