태백시에는 한강, 낙동강, 삼척 오십천 유역의 분수계가 만나는 삼수령이 있다. 현재 삼수령을 홍보하기 위해 35번 국도 상의 피재 고개 정상에는 삼수령 조형물과 삼수정이 있다. 그러나 이곳은 실제로 삼수령의 정점이 아니기 때문에 강우가 내렸을 때 한강, 낙동강, 오십천 중 한 곳으로 흘러갈 것이라는 상상을 하기는 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 GIS 공간분석과 현장답사를 수행하여 실제 삼수령을 선정하고, GPS 측량을 통해 위치정보를 획득하였다. 실제 삼수령은 현재 삼수령 조형물이 있는 지점으로부터 매봉산 능선을 따라 남서쪽으로 약 1㎞ 떨어진 지점에 위치하였다. 이 지점에는 현재 백두대간과 낙동정맥 갈림길의 이정표가 있다.
In the city of Taebaek-si, there is Samsuryeong (the name means "divided by three waters", through which basin the Han, Nakdong and Samcheok Ohsipcheon rivers. To drum up public awareness of the Samsuryeong divide, the city built the Samsuryeong tower and Samsujeong summerhouse on top of the hill called Pijae, located along national road no. 35. However, this is not the actual centroid of those three rivers, so it is difficult to think that rainfall here could flow into any of the three rivers that run through it. As such, in this study, we selected the actual divide for those three rivers (Samsuryeong) and acquired the location information through GPS measurement. As a result, the actual Samsuryeong divide (divide for the three rivers) was found to be located in about 1 km on the southwest from the current location of the Samsuryeong tower, along the ridge line of the Maebong Mountain. At this point, there is currently a milestone for the fork between Baekdu-daegan and Nakdong-Jeongmaek.
