This is an attempt to search for the basic concepts of Chinese aesthetics corresponding to those of Western . Since modern after Renaissance the basic concepts of Western aesthetics have been "beauty" and "fine arts", If then, what should be those of Chinese aesthetics? Before answering the question, we have to remember that the terms of "beauty" and "fine arts" are translated into "mei(美)" and "yishu(藝術)", and are ordinarily accepted without doubts. I am, however, raising the question of whether these translation could be justified in proper sense of Chinese aesthetics. In this respect I would like to examined the philological and textual meaning of "mei(美)" and "yishu(藝術)" in ancient Chinese texts. With these considerations, there seems to be something common and different in their implication and extension, respectively. That is, the Western concept of beauty has traditionally been the imitation of universal Nature, whereas that of Chinese aesthetics had been "充實之謂美". If then, what could be the system of yishu in Chinese aesthetics corresponding to that of western. To elucidate this is the intention of this article. With final examinations so far, I have concluded that the translations of "beauty" and "fine art" are almost correct ones of "mei(美)" and "yishu(藝術)" in their concepts, respectively. If then, what could be the system in Chinese aesthetics corresponding to those of western aesthetics? As to this question, I suggested the term of "sanjue(三絶)" consisting of shi(詩) · shu(書) · hua(畵) with the textual authorities that sanjue was the subsystem of "liuyi(六藝)" and liuyi was established as the educational and cultural program for the "shidafu(士大夫)" similar to that of liberal artist in the western. Further, the concept of "aesthetic experience' of fine arts could adequately be translated as that of "jingjie(境界)" in Chinese aesthetics.
