심청가는 오랜 기간 동안에 지평전환이 지속적으로 이루어져 그 양상이 실로 다양하다. 지평전환은 심청가의 작가나 감상자가 선행지평에 만족하지 못할 때 일어나는데, 선행지평을 비판하는 정도에 그치는 경우도 있고, 개작으로까지 나아가는 경우도 있다. 본고에서는 심청가의 결말부에 일어난 지평전환의 양상을 고찰하여 심청가 이해에 기여하고자 하였다. 심청가의 결말부는 심청가에서 제기된 문제가 해결되는 하이라이트인데, 그 중요성에 비해 거의 주목받지 못했다. 최근에 몇몇 연구성과들이 제출되었지만 본고와 논점이 다르거나, 논의가 소략해서 재론할 필요가 있었다. 본고에서 논의한 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 심봉사가 맹인잔치에 참례하기 위해서 황성으로 올라가는 대목에서 이루어진 지평전환의 양상은 다음과 같다. 1)뺑덕어미는 심봉사의 성적 본능을 충족시켜주는 인물이고, 골계적인 재미를 고조시키는 인물이다. 심봉사가 동네 사람들의 주선으로 뺑덕어미와 결연하던 것이 뺑덕어미가 자원출가하는 것으로 바뀌었다. 2)심봉사가 옷을 도둑맞고 고을 관장에게 의관을 구하는 삽화는 비현실적이어서 축소되거나 삭제되었다. 3)뺑덕어미가 황봉사와 도망하는 대목은 웃음을 유발하는 쪽으로 부연되었다. 4)안씨맹인은 심봉사가 딸과 상봉할 것을 豫示해 주는 역할과 심봉사의 반려자요 아들을 얻을 수 있는 아내로서의 역할을 한다. 둘째, 심봉사가 맹인잔치에 참례하여 딸을 만나게 되고 눈을 뜨고 즐거워하는 대목에서 이루어진 지평전환의 양상은 다음과 같다. 1)심황후가 길게 자탄하며 슬퍼하던 것이 심황후의 체통을 유지되도록 간략하게 축소되었다. 2)부녀가 상봉하는 대목은 극적 긴장감과 이야기를 재미있고 그럴듯하게 꾸미기 위해서 확대 부연되었다. 3)심봉사가 눈을 뜨고 즐겁게 춤추는 대목은 눈을 뜬 황홀한 순간을 만끽하는 방향으로 크게 부연되었다. 4)심부원군이 부귀영화를 누리는 후일담은 한때 부연되었다가 근래에 축소되거나 삭제되었다. 그러나 후일담은 심청의 효성에 대한 보상의 의미이고, 민중의 소망적 사고를 반영한 것이다.

<Shimcheong-ga> has continued to have a variety of aspects of horizontal reorientations for a long time. Horizontal reorientations occur when the author or appreciators are not satisfied with the previous horizontal reorientation. In this case they only criticize the previous horizontal reorientation, or rewrite it. The purpose of this study is to explore the aspects and meanings of horizontal reorientations at the climax of <Shimcheong-ga> and contribute to the understanding of it. The climax of <Shimcheong-ga> is the highlight of it in which presented problems are solved, but most researchers has not paid attention to it. The results of the study are summarized as follows:First, the aspects and meanings of horizontal reorientations that happen at the scene where Simbongsa goes to Hwangsung to participate in the party for the blind are as follows: 1) PPaengdeokeomi is a character who satisfies Simbongsa’s sexual instinct, and who heightens humorous enjoyment. Her forming a relationship with Simbongsa through the mediator of neighbors changes into her voluntary marrying him. 2) The episode of Simbongsa asking the country magistrate for the new clothes for the stolen clothes is reduced or deleted because of its being unrealistic. 3) The scene of PPaengdeokeomi’s running away with Hwangbongsa is extended to cause laughing. 4) Anssimaengin plays a role of foreshadowing Simbongsa’s meeting his daughter, and another role of a wife accompanying Simbongsa and giving birth to a son. Second, the aspects and meanings of horizontal reorientations at the scene of Simbongsa’s meeting his daughter and recovering his eyesight in great joy at the party for the blind are as follows: 1) Empress Sim’s being sad is briefly reduced in order to maintain her dignity. 2) The scene of father and daughter meeting each other is amplified and extended to cause a dramatic tension and to make the story more interesting. 3) The scene of Simbongsa’s recovering his eyesight and dancing with delight is greatly extended to enjoy his rapture of the moment. 4) The subsequent story of Simboowongun’s enjoying wealth, rank, and fame is once amplified, but later reduced or deleted.
