이원수의「불새의 춤」은 1970년 11월 13일 열악한 노동조건에 항거, 분신자살한 노동자 전태일의 이야기를 형상화한 작품으로, 당시로서는 아무도 생각하지 못했던 노동 현장의 문제를 다뤄 아동문학의 새로운 지평을 열었다는 점에서 가치가 있다. 또한 이 작품은 산업사회의 구조적 문제점이 나르시시즘 장애를 일으키는데 주요 원인이 되고 있음을 시사해 준다. 본고에서는 ‘증거에 의한 의미 탐색’을 통해 작가의식과 주제를 파악하고, 하인즈 코헛(Heinz Kohut)의 ‘자기애의 발달과정’을 전제로 병적 인 나르시시즘에 의해 작품을 조명하였다. 「불새의 춤」에서 두루미들의 ‘예술적 행위’는 실제 관객들에게 무언가 전달하고자 하는 의도가 숨어있음을 찾아낼 수가 있다. 이러한 의도는 두루미들의 행위를 ‘증거에 의한 의미’로 해석할 때본질적 성격(essential character)’에 해당하며, ‘증거에 의한 의미’는 또 다른 ‘속(續) - 증거에 의한 의미’를 내포하고 있다. 즉 ‘두루미’는 ‘노동자’를, ‘원장’은 기업체의 ‘사장’을, 그리고 ‘28호 두루미’는 모든 노동자들의 대표 ‘전태일’을 상징한다. 작품을 분석한 결과, 개인의 삶에 미치는 환경적 요소와 등장인물의 나르시시즘과는 밀접한 관계가 있음을 발견할 수 있는데, 폐쇄적 공간에서 강압적으로 춤을 추어야 하는 두루미의 행위가 병적인 나르시시즘 양상으로 나타나는 경우라 하겠다. 아울러, 주인공 28호가 나르시시즘을 추구하는 과정에서 몇 가지 특징을 나타내고 있는데, 주체가 환경적 요소에 의한 정서적 외상으로 감당할 수 없는 절망적인 상태에서 삶을 마감하는 점, 주체의 환경적 요소에는 방해자만 존재 할 뿐 조력자가 없어 주체가 절망감에 빠져 결국 죽음을 맞이하는 점, 주체가 고립된 공간에서 소외감을 느끼게 되고 절망감에서 변형적인 나르시시즘을 추구하는 점이다. 따라서 28호의 나르시시즘 변화과정은 자기애 결핍 → 상실 → 추구 → 절망 → 죽음의 패턴으로 압축할 수 있으며, 주체의 자유의지와 상관없이 억압과 구속의 환경의 상태에서는 능동적이기 보다는 수동적일 수밖에 없고, 결핍된 자아는 나르시시즘의 상실과 함께 존재가치의 무의미함과 절망감에 빠지고, 결국 죽음에 이르게 된다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 결론적으로 이원수의「불새의 춤」은 기본인권이 박탈된 상황에서는 병적인 나르시시즘만이 존재하므로, 미성숙한 아동이 건강하게 성장하기 위해서는 환경적 요소(시대적 상황이나 주변인물)가 중요한 영향을 미칠 수 있다고 본다.
[The Dance of the Fire Bird] by Won Su Lee is a work about the story of Tae Il Jeon who has fought for inadequate labor condition and has burnt himself to death on November 13th 1970. The value of this book is that it opened a new prospect in the children’s literature by dealing with a sensitive issue for that era and also this book imply us that structural problems of industrial society has been leading cause for narcissistic disorder. In this paper, I grasp the theme and the writer’s consciousness through ‘searching meanings by evidence’ and I premise Heinz Kohut’s ‘Process of narcissism’ to focused on pathological narcissism. In [The Dance of the Fire Bird] we can easily notice that there is hidden intention to deliver something to audience from the artistic act of cranes. Through this we can tell act of cranes is relevant to essential character and evidential meaning includes another ‘continuation – evidential meaning’. In other words, ‘cranes’ means laborers, ‘director’ means the owner, and ‘the crane no.28’ represent the leader of laborers, Tae Il Jeon. Analysing this work says that character’s narcissism and environmental factors which can affect individuals are closely related and it is the case that the act of cranes who forced to dance in closed space appears as aspect of pathological narcissism. In addition, there are three features in the process of the crane no. 28 to pursue the narcissism. First, the subject dies in a desperate state that he can not afford the emotional trauma cause by environmental factors. Second, the subject eventually face the death in desperation because there are no help but only disturbance in environmental factor, Third, the subject pursue the transformed narcissism from the isolated desperation And the transformation of crane no.28 can be compressed to the pattern of narcissistic deficiency → loss → pursuit → despair → death. The subject has no choice but to be passive rather than to be active in the state of suppression and detention regardless of its will. Ego deficiency lead to loss of narcissism and sink into despair and meaninglessness of value of existence. In conclusion, [The Dance of the Fire Bird] describes human spirit as there is only pathological narcissism in situation of deprived of the basic human rights and it makes to feels incompetence and frustration of life, and finally has no other option to death. And in this book can be significantly evaluated in aspect of symbolizing human spirit as an objective correlative, the crane.
