Reperusing Choi In-hoon’s Hans and Gretel

「한스와 그레텔」은 최인훈의 작품 목록 중에서 예외적으로 논의가 드물었던 텍스트이다. 이 희곡의 난해성의 주범인 한스 보르헤르트란 인물은 제2차 세계대전 중 히틀러의 충복이었던 루돌프헤스가 모델이다. 작가는 이 인물에게 유대인을 볼모로 연합국과 휴전을 성사시키라는 히틀러의 밀명을 받은 인물이라는 허구를 덧입혀 자신의 운명과 세계와의 불화를 30년간이나 곱씹는 사유형 인간의 특질을 부여한다. 이러한 허구적 조형을 통하여 작가는 이 인물의 성격이 실상은 주체의 자기동일성에 집념한 비정한 근대주의자의 그것임을 탈식민주의적인 시각 또는 인간 구원/사랑이라는 보편적 문제의식의 지반 위에서 그려낸다. 그리고 이 인물이 가진 망집을 작가는 불교 사상으로 해체한다. 인간의 왜소한 운명과 상보적 연관성을 깨닫기를 권하는 매개인물 X의 부드러운 설득에 그러한 성격이 담겨 있다. 이를 계기로 ‘현대판 마녀의 성인 정치’로부터 해방되는 인물을 통하여 작가는 문학이 주는 환상의 힘, 또는 이 희곡 자체의 유기적 형식이 주는 환상으로서 장엄한 서사시적 울림을 성취한다. 또한 서구사라는 재료에 동양/한국의 지혜를 투입한 대체역사적 성격의 이 희곡에서 우리는 최인훈 문학의 통합적 면모와 함께 희곡판 『태풍』의 면모를 읽는다.
