Lee, Sechang. 2002. Markedness Constraints and Optimality Theory. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 27-1, 87-107. The purpose of this paper is to claim that it is better to analyze phonological phenomena in such a way as to eliminate the use of surface generalizations as universal constraints. Javanese has a general process deleting h in intervocalic contexts. Unfortunately, as a theoretical characterization such an expression as *VhV gives no insight as to why there do not exist such constraints as *VpV, *VbV, *VtV, *VdV, *VkV, *VgV, *VlV, *VnV, *VmV, etc., which would never play any active role throughout the system. I propose to replace the *VhV with a principled universal constraint, in accordance with the basic tenet of the Optimality Theory. I show that by so doing our grammar would become simpler and more effective. (Sookmyung Women's University)
