이 글의 목적은 지금까지 글쓰기 교육의 이상적인 모델로 여겨온 온 표현적(expressive) 글쓰기를 넘어 합리적 의사소통이라는 글쓰기의 본질적 목적에 부합하는 논증적(argumentative) 글쓰기의 모델을 제시하고, 이를 달성하기 위한 구체적인 방안을 제시하려는데 있다. 이를 위해 자신의 생각이나 체험을 상대와 단순히 공감하기 위한 기존의 글쓰기가 갖는 한계와 문제점에 대한 비판은 필수적이다. 무엇보다 표현적 글쓰기는 상호간의 원활한 의사소통과 설득이라는 글쓰기의 본질적인 목적을 반영해내지 못할 뿐만 아니라, 사회적 요구라는 차원에서도 그 한계를 지닌다. 요구되는 논증적 글쓰기에서 의도하는 바는 자신의 생각이나 체험을 얼마나 적절하게 표현하여 상대로 하여금 공감을 유발시켰는가에 있다기보다는, 얼마나 설득력 있는 논거들과 추론구조가 제시되었는가에 있다. 그래서 논증적 글쓰기에서 사용되는 언어는 필자의 체험을 올바르게 전달하는 매체가 아니라, 언어를 통해 사건을 합리적으로 재구성함으로써 설득력을 확보하는 과정인 것이다. 사회적 요구라는 측면에서 보았을 때도 논증적 글쓰기는 다양한 합리성의 구조가 존재하는 정보화 사회 속에서 원활한 의사소통을 위해 필수적이다. 이러한 의사소통능력을 함양하기 위해 요구되는 글쓰기의 대안적 모델은 바로 논증적 글쓰기이다. 따라서 삶의 다양한 구조 속에서 자신의 주장을 설득력 있게 제시하고 타인과의 원활한 의사소통을 위해 합리적인 논증구조를 체계적으로 제시하는 논증적 글쓰기는 결정적이다.
