‘논술’(論述)은 다른 모든 학문들의 기반위에서 출발한다. 논술은 학생들 스스로 문제를 발견하고 해결하는 종합적인 사고 능력을 요구하는 고도의 정신적 활동이기 때문에, 논술 능력은 인간의 총체적 능력이라고 할 수 있다. 단편적인 지식 주입과 획일적인 답안을 요구하는 우리 교육의 맹점에 대한 대안으로서 논술의 원조라고 할 수 있는 바칼로레아(Baccalauréat)와 책문(策問)을 통해 우리나라 논술 교육과 논술 시험을 변혁시킬 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다. 논술을 공부하는 궁극 목적은 세상과 삶을 이해하는 통찰력과 분석의 능력을 기르고 그것을 논리적으로 표현하는 방법을 익히기 위한 것이다. 그런 점에서 전통시대의 논술은 그 사람의 인품과 폭넓은 교양, 그리고 능력을 총체적으로 평가하는 척도였다. 전통시대의 논술은 지적 활동, 언론 활동 그리고 인재를 등용하는 방식으로서 교양인들의 삶에 필수적인 조건이 되었다. 바로 이러한 점에서 한 사람의 식견과 사상, 도량을 평가하는 기준이 되었던 전통시대의 논술 시험인 ‘책문’과 또한 세계를 아우르는 통합적 지식의 바탕 위에서 다양성을 존중하며 엄밀하게 사유하는 능력을 요구하는 프랑스의 대학입학자격시험 ‘바칼로레아’가 우리나라의 논술 교육에 시사하는 바가 크다. 이 점에서 책문과 바칼로레아는 서로 대립되고 대척적인 논술의 두 ‘유형’이 아니라, 서로 보완되고 통합되어야 할 논술의 두 ‘요소’로 보아야 한다.
‘Essay writing’(論述) starts on the basis of all other academic disciplines. Since the essay writing is a high degree of mental activity that requires comprehensive thinking ability to allow students to detect and solve problems for themselves, the essay writing skills are said to be the overall ability of humans. In this regard, methods to change Korean essay writing education and tests were investigated through Baccalauréat and Chaek-Mun(策問) as an alternative against blind spots of Korean education aimed at injection of fragmentary knowledge and uniform answers. The ultimate goal of studying the essay writing is to develop an insight and analytical skills of understanding the world and life and learn how to express them logically. In that sense, the essay writing in the traditional era was a criterion to assess person's personality, broad education and ability and served an essential condition in the life of sophisticates in such a way to promote intellectual and media activities and recruit men of ability. In this sense, ‘Chaek-Mun', the essay test in the traditional era which served as a criterion to assess one person's insights, ideas and generosity as well as ‘Baccalaureat', the main diploma required to pursue university studies that respect diversity and require ability to reason strictly based on a comprehensive knowledge that encompasses the world has huge implications on the essay writing education in Korea. In this regard, Chaek-Mun and Baccalaureat need to be dealt with as ‘two elements' of the essay writing that should be integrated and complemented each other, not ‘two types' of an opposing and antipodal essay.
