고대 그리스에서 축제의 기원은 정확하게 이야기하기는 어렵지만 대부분 종교 제의에서 출발한 것으로 보인다. 본 논문은 오늘날 일상적으로 벌어지는 다양한 축제들의 궁극적인 목표와 방향을 반성적으로 성찰해보기 위해 고대 그리스 종교축제의 기원과 목적 및 기능 등을 검토하는 데 목표가 있다. 우선 그리스 종교 축제가 가진 주요 요소들과 원형적 특징을 살펴 볼 수 있다. 그리스 종교 축제의 목적은 일차적으로 신들을 즐겁게 해드리는 것이었다. 그것은 신들의 호의를 얻기 위한 것이다. 그리스 종교 축제의 가장 중요한 특징은 흥미롭게도 다양한 종류의‘경쟁’(agon)이라 할 수 있다. 그리스인들은 종교적 제의를 바친 후에 다양한 분야에서 경쟁을 한다. 그리스 종교 축제는 희생 제의로부터 아주 독특한 종교적 축제를 발전시켰고, 오늘날 현대인들이 축제라고 부를 때 말하는 중요한 요소들의 원형적 특징들을 포함하고 있다. 그리스의 종교 축제는 인간의 탁월한 능력을 발휘하여 신에 대해 경외심을 보여주는 중요한 표현양식이었다. 그리스 철학 이전에 인간의 탁월성과 관련된 주요 논의는 운동경기를 통해 나타난 신체의 탁월성이나 춤이나 노래 및 드라마 경연대회를 통해 나타난 영혼의 탁월성 등에 주안점이 있었다. 그러나 그리스 철학 이후부터는 본격적으로 영혼과 신체의 탁월성을 훈련시키기 위한 훈련이나 교육은 진리를 인식하기 위한 목적과 직접적인 연관을 가진다. 현대의 축제도 고대로부터 시작된 축제의 주요 요소들을 포함하고 있다. 비록종교적인 목적에서 출발했던 축제가 본래의 목적과 상관이 없어진다 할지라도, 여전히 인간들이 ‘경쟁’을 통해 ‘탁월성’을 드러내려는 목적과 기능은 축제의 중요한 원형적 특징이 될 수 있다.

It is difficult to explain explicitly the origin of the festival in the ancient Greek, but it seems to start from religious ritual. In this paper, I try to examine the purpose and function of ancient Greek religious festivals so as to reflect modern various festivals and to present to its new direction. First, it is necessary to find and analyze the archetypal characteristics of major elements in Greek religious festivals. The primary purpose of Greek religious festivals is to make the gods pleased. It is to get the favor of the gods. The most important feature of Greek religious festivals is interestingly a various kind of 'competition' (agon). After the Greeks perform religious ritual to gods, they have competed in a variety of fields. Greek religious festivals have very uniquely developed festivals from the religious rituals, and they are included the archetypal characteristics of important factors of festivals. Greek religious festival performed human excellence to show reverence for gods. Before Greek philosophy, human excellence was divided into the excellence of the body by athletics and the excellence of the soul through sing and dance and drama competition. After Greek philosophy, training the excellence of the soul and the body are related directly to recognition of the truth. Contemporary festivals include key elements originated from the ancient festivals. Although the festivals beginning from religious purposes is lost a part of the original purpose, training and practice of human excellence through competition is to be the archetypal characteristics of the festivals.
