본 논문에서는 미국 기독교 철학의 1994년 수평적 동향을 탐색하려고 시도한다. 미국의 기독교 철학은 중세기 철학의 연장선상에서 전개되고 있다는 것이 필자의 생각이다. 다만 지금의 미국이 중세기와 같지 않은 것은 그 사이에 기독교가 여러 차례 분열을 거쳤고 또 근현대 사회의 다기한 변화의 영향을 받아 다양한 모습을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그러나 중세의 로마와 현대의 미국은 문화적 측면에서 대표성을 가지고 있으며, 사상적 공통점을 갖는다. 아직도 국민의 70% 이상이 스스로를 기독교인이라고 생각하는 사회인 미국의 기독교를 음미하는 것은 그래서 의미가 있다. 400년의 역사를 가진 미국이 종교적 신앙으로서 기독교를 “이용하는 것”은 그러나 기독교 철학을 한다는 것과는 약간의 거리가 있다. 개인이 아니라 공동체적으로 학문적 움직임을 보인 것은 1984년의 『신앙과 철학』이라는 전문학술지 창간을 계기로 시작되었다. 저변의 확대와 학술회원들의 성실성으로 2014년 현재 30주년이 되었다. 우선 필자는 10주년에 초점을 맞추어 그 영향들을 조명해 보았다. 10년의 세월은 그 활동이 정착되기도 하고, 그 특징들이 드러날 최소한의 시간도 되었다고 판단하기 때문이다. 탐구방식은 『신앙과 철학』(1994년 간행)에 수록된 논문과 토론을 읽고 분석하는 방식을 택했다. 30여 편의 논문에서는 우선 30% 정도의 분량이 형이상학적 주제를 다루고 있다. 그 다음이 도덕철학, 인식론 분야의 논문이었다. 그러나 비록 그 양이 많지는 않아도 신학철학, 실천철학, 해석학, 실존철학, 가치론 등과 심지어 여성신학에 이르기까지 다양한 주제를 다루고 있다. 이것은 기독교 철학자들의 현실적인 관심을 투영하는 것으로 보인다. 아마도 10년 동안의 활동에서 여전히 기독교의 “신학적” 속성에 대한 본질적 논란이 계속되고 있는 것 같다. 또 이 시기에 미국의 선도적 철학자들이 뚜렷이 부각되는 것도 특징적이다. 그들은 단순히 주제 차원이 아니라 자신의 철학의 근간을 기독교 신앙에 두는 것으로 보인다. 또 전체적인 논의의 방식이 분석철학적인 점도 주류철학계의 인물들이 기독교 철학 논의에 관여하는 것으로 보이며, 이 시기에 중국과 러시아 등과 교류를 통해 미국의 기독교 철학을 알리는 활동도 시작하는 것은 기독교 철학자들의 순수한 기독교적 헌신으로 보이는 면이다.

The paper seeks to show what tendency US Christianity is in 1994. The writer thinks that there might be something in common between the medieval Christianity in Rome and the contemporary one in the United States of America. American Christianity of 400 years of history had not had Christian philosophy until Faith and Philosophy was published in 1984, which has never failed to do it since then. 1994, 10th anniversary, was the time when we can look clearly at the maturity of American Christian philosophy. This is why we selected 1994’s published journals. The method we use is by looking into papers, discussions and reviews in the journals published in 1994, and analysing the issues into genres and interpret them in terms of contribution. The issues under consideration include: metaphysics(30% in large), moral philosophy, epistemology, theological philosophy, practical philosophy, hermeneutics, existential philosophy, value theories; they cover even feminist philosophy; this shows that Christian philosophy covers not only classical issues but also current trends. The paper shows the fact that it main issue keeps talking something theological since 10 years ago. The study says that Christian philosophy gives birth to America Super star philosophers in many fields; this does in turn show us the fact that American Christian philosophers begins to influence their capability on American philosophical societies in general. Besides, there are some trials to develop Christian culture out to foreign (especially closed) countries such as Russian and China: this seems to say that Christianity is sacrificial in nature, and they are pure Christian scholars.
