정신 장애가 장애 범주에 포함됨에도 불구하고 이에 대한 논의는 아직 특수교육학 영역에서 활발하게 진행되지 못하고 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 입장에서 정신 장애에 대한 기존의 병리적인 이해와는 구별되는 Vygotsky의 정신 기능의 역동적 연결 개념을 중심으로 인간의 정신 기능 발달 과정을 새롭게 조망하고자 하였다. 연구결과 정신 장애는 단순히 어떤 병적 상태가 아니라 “간기능적 연결”이라는 보편적인 정신 기능 발달의 기본 원리에 따르는 정신 현상 중 하나임을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 정신장애인들의 증상(예: 환청, 망상) 완화에 주력하는 기존의 병리적 의료적 관점을 넘어서 이들이 관계적 타인을 새롭게 경험하며 생활할 수 있도록 학문적으로 또 실천적으로 노력하여야 할 것이다.
Although mental disability has been included in the category of disability, debates on it has not yet become active in the area of special education. This study tries to illuminate the process of psychological function of human with a concept of active connection between psychological functions. The concept is distinguished from that of pathological regarding mental disability, claimed by Vygotsky. As a result, it can be asserted that mental disability is not to be simply understood as a pathological condition. Rather it has to be accepted as one of psychological phenomena which follow a fundamental principle of “inter-functional connection”. Therefore it is important in both academic and practical dimension to try to achieve experience of relational other and not to focus only on alleviation of the mental disease symptoms such as auditory hallucination or delusion.
