전통적으로 가톨릭주의에 젖어있던 프랑스 왕국에 처음으로 프로테스탄티즘이 출현하기 시작하였던 시기는 프랑수아 1세 치세기(1515-1547)이다. 당대의 박해 열풍 속에서 프로테스탄트들은 종파 형태를 갖추지 못한 채 일반 회중의 형태로 집회를 유지하고 있었다. 앙리 2세 치세(1547-1559) 중반까지 프로테스탄트들은 루터주의의 영향을 받았으나, 앙리 2세 치세 말에 이르러 칼뱅의 영향 아래 교리체계의 유지와 신앙 공동체 내 위계제도 등을 갖춘 하나의 종파로 성장하게 되었다. 프랑수아 2세 치세(1559-1560)에 들어서 가톨릭파에게 정치적으로 경사된 정책의 실행 결과 칼뱅주의 종파는 잃어버린 권력을 되찾기 위한 투쟁을 감수하는 정파로 성장하기 시작하였다. 즉, 칼뱅주의파는 ‘앙부아즈 음모’라고 하는 집단적 무장봉기를 감행하였으며, 이를 계기로 자신들의 정치력 강화와 칼뱅주의 의식의 허용 등을 공개적으로 요구하기 시작하였다. 샤를르 9세의 치세가 시작되면서 칼뱅주의파는 정파로서의 경쟁력을 갖추게 되었다. 이것은 양파로부터 미성년인 국왕의 신변을 보호하고자 했던 태후의 균형정치에 의해 反 가톨릭파에게 왕실의 힘이 실리면서 가능하게 된 것이었다.
