본 논문의 목적은 칼뱅의 설교신학을 고찰함으로써 그의 설교신학이설교자에게 주는 교훈을 찾아보는 것이다. 이러한 목적을 위해 우리는설교 자체, 설교자, 회중을 중심으로 칼뱅의 설교에 대한 이해를 추적정리하였다. 목회자로서 칼뱅은 설교가 회중들에게 믿음을 갖게 하는 유용한 수단임을 부인하지 않았다. 그러나 설교는 근본적으로 하나님의 뜻, 하나님의 뜻을 전달하는 것임을 더 강조하였다. 더 나아가서 설교는 하나님의 말씀을 전달할 뿐 아니라 하나님의 임재와 은혜를 매개하는 수단이라고 주장하였다. 칼뱅은 설교는 철저하게 성경에 근거해야 한다고 생각하였다. 설교는 회중을 성경의 진리 가운데로 인도하고 그 진리를따라 살도록 인도하는 활동이라고 생각하였다. 칼뱅 스스로 자신을 하나님의 사자(使者)로 인식했듯이 설교자는 자신이 하나님의 메시지를 전달하는 사자라는 의식이 있어야 한다고 주장하였다. 그러므로 하나님의 사자인 설교자는 겸손해야 하며, 설교자자신이 먼저 그 말씀에 순종해야 하며, 비난과 위협에도 불구하고 용기있게 말씀을 전달해야 한다고 가르쳤다. 칼뱅은 설교는 회중에게 전달되어야 하는 것임을 잊지 않았다. 그러므로 설교자는 회중이 이해할 수 있도록 회중의 수준에 맞추어 진리를명료하게 전달해야 한다고 주장하였다. 그리고 회중은 설교자가 전달하는 설교를 열린 마음으로 겸손하게 받아야 한다고 하였다. 그러나예외적인 경우이겠지만 칼뱅은 성숙한 회중은 설교자가 진리를 바로전달하는지 분별할 수 있어야 한다고 생각하였다. 칼뱅은 설교에서 회중의 능동적인 역할을 기대하였다. 경건의 신학자로서 칼뱅은 설교의 목적은 단순히 하나님에 대한 진리를 전달하는 것에 그쳐서는 안 된다고 하였다. 그는 설교의 주된 목적은 회중들이 하나님의 임재와 은혜를 경험함으로 자신들의 삶을 변화시키는 것이라고 주장하였다. 그의 신학적 사고의 특징이 그렇듯이그는 설교란 인간이 하는 일인 동시에 궁극적으로 성령의 도우심을 통해 이루어지는 하나님의 일이라고 생각하였다. 칼뱅은 설교자는 설교의 방법과 기술을 습득하기 전에 설교가 무엇이며, 설교자의 역할이 무엇인지 분명한 이해를 갖고 있어야 한다고강조하였다. 동시에 그는 설교가 회중에게 잘 수용되기 위하여 설교가어떻게 전달되어야 하는지에 대해서도 깊은 관심을 갖고 있었다. 새로운 설교학 운동의 관점에 비추어 보아도 칼뱅의 설교신학은 매우 건전하고 중요한 가르침을 담고 있다. 시대정신에 휘둘리는 설교, 회중의요구에 영합하는 설교가 전달되는 오늘의 설교 현실을 걱정하는 사람들은 칼뱅의 설교 신학에서 중요한 교훈을 발견할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine John Calvin’s theology of preaching, and to glean the necessary lessons for the preachers in Korean churches.To that end, we examine Calvin’s theology of preaching in three dimensions; the preaching, the preacher and the audience. As a pastor Calvin did not deny that preaching is an effective tool to help people gain Christian faith and live out their faith.But he emphasized that preaching be to based on the will of God, before being a tool for edifying human beings.Calvin believed that preaching not only deliver God’s words, but also shows God’s presence and radiates God’s grace. Calvin, being a biblical theologian, thought that sermons must be meticulously based on the scripture.He understood preaching as an activity to guide the audience to the biblical truth and convincing them to live in the world according to the truth.In the role of a preacher,Calvin thought of himself as God’s messenger.He taught that as a deliverer of God’s message, the preacher must remain humble while forcefully delivering God’s message, even if it carries sufferings from 32criticisms. Sermons must reach the audience.Preacher with no audience has no value. Calvin taught that the preacher must deliver the message in the language of the audience, taught at a level appropriate for the audience to understand clearly. Likewise, the audience must be attentive and listen to the sermon with submissive hearts. As a spiritual theologian, Calvin believed that the purpose of preaching must go beyond simply delivering the knowledge about God. The primary purpose of preaching is to help the audience experience the presence and grace of God in real way and transform their daily lives.He believed that while preaching is a work of human being, God is active in the process and ultimately the intervention by the Holy Spirit would be necessary for the preaching be effective. The preacher must clearly understand the roles of preaching and preacher before the methods and techniques. Even when viewed from the criteria of modern homiletics, Calvin’s theology of preaching stands sound. Korean churches have much to learn from Calvin’s theology of preaching.
