일렉트로닉 댄스 음악(EDM)은 오늘날 젊은이들 사이에 가장 대중적이며보편적인 음악 양식이다. 1990년대에 ‘일렉트로니카’ 또는 ‘테크노’라는 음악장르가 본격적으로 등장했다. 더 구체적으로 EDM은 1990년대 디지털 혁명을 통해 확립된 새로운 테크놀로지를 통해 확산된 음악 장르이다. 본격적인EDM이 급부상하자, 일부 크리스천 아티스트들은 발 빠르게 EDM을 통한새로운 기독교 음악을 시도하였고, 세속적 클럽을 연상하게 하는 EDM 워쉽은 그 찬반 논쟁이 뜨겁게 진행되고 있다. EDM 논쟁에는 두 가지 논점이있다. 첫째는 ‘진정한 예배란 무엇인가’ 하는 본질적이고 신학적 논점이고, 둘째는 EDM이라는 음악 장르에 대한 이해와 판단에 관한 문화적 논점이다. 본 논문은 후자에 보다 큰 초점을 맞추며 대학 선교의 보다 발전적 방향정립을 위해 예술과 기술이 결합된 이 새로운 문화 양식을 분석하고자 한다. 우선 EDM이란 음악 양식에 대해 기술적 차원(Electronic)과 문화적 차원(Dance)으로 나누어 그 기원과 성격을 기술하며 EDM은 우리 시대에 어떤음악인지 기독교 세계관에 기초해 그 문화적 성격을 분석한다. 두 번째로EDM은 무의미한 동어 반복적 사운드과 몽환적 클럽 분위기로 인해 비판을받는다. 하지만 여러 EDM 안의 메시지는 테크놀로지를 통해 기술사회의 모순을 비판하고, 탈휴머니티적 성격을 통해 휴머니즘의 본질에 대해 질문한다는 것이다. 특히 기독교 신앙을 자신들의 음악에 적극 표현해 온 록밴드U2의 사례를 중심으로 EDM을 통해 기독교적 메시지가 전달될 수 있는 가능성에 대해 고찰해 보겠다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 크리스천 EDM의 사례와현황을 살펴보면서, EDM의 어떻게 어느 정도 수용할 수 있는지 그 경계성에 대해 토의한다. 특히 최근의 EDM 워십 논쟁의 찬반 양론의 논점을 비평하며 EDM 예배의 적절한 방향성을 제안한다.
EDM(Electronic Dance Music) is the most popular musical genre among the younger generation today. Since the early 1990s, ‘electronic’ or ‘techno’ music has been developed by the contemporary digital technology, which changed the whole system of our society and life style. With the rise of EDM, many Christian musicians and ministers have also tried to apply EDM into Christian worship. It causes a serious controversy, because EDM is closely related to secular club culture. The main arguments are focused on two issues: One is more theologically about what the true worship is in modern context; and the other is about cultural adequacy of EDM in Christian worship. This paper more focuses on the latter cultural issue. For the effective and sound direction for the campus mission and ministry, this paper analyzes and evaluates this new culture which is a combination of art and technology. First, it describes the origin and development of EDM with two dimensions: ‘electronic’ focusing on technology, and ‘dance’ focusing on its subculture of dance club. Second, this paper analyzes the messages in EDM works. Especially and ironically many EDM artists criticize dehumanized modern technological society and seriously question about what the true humanity is through their music. Finally, this paper introduces the history of Christian EDM and discusses the main arguments of EDM worship controversy. Also this paper suggests that the future direction of Christian EDM should be emphasize both aesthetical excellence and matured worldview in the contemporary society and culture.
