The present essay explores Yun Jeung's scholarship and its relation to the Shilhak (實學). Unlike other late Joseon scholars, Yun Jeung frequently used the term Shilhak in his writings. He believed that Shilhak was the ultimate aim for every scholar at the time. There have been disputes over the relationship between Yun Jeung's Shilhak and Jujahak (朱子學). While his Shilhak was largely considered the scholarship based on Jujahak, this may not be true since he criticized Song Shiyeol and his followers' Juja Absolutism (朱子絶對主義). He pursued the freedom of thought raising problems and being involved in many discussions and arguments. He emphasized practical utility and pragmatism, which was furthered by his continuous interest in practical scholarship related to Gyeongsechiyong (經世致用). Yun Jeung's scholarship was succeeded by his students led by Gwon Yijin. His scholarship reveals some differences from other late Joseon Shilhak scholars, which indicates his unique position in history of late Joseon scholarship.
