18세기 대서양 반노예제 운동의 역사는 크게 노예제에 대한 반감의 확산, 이 반감의 정치적 사상으로의 전환, 그리고 노예무역 폐지성공으로 특징지어지는 세 단계로 이루어져 있다. 대서양 반노예제운동의 성격 변화의 과정 속에서 대각성 운동과, 미국 독립혁명이라는 두 가지 사건은 중요한 전환점이 되었다. 전자는 노예제에 대한반감이 대서양 세계에 퍼질 수 있는 통로의 형성에 궁극적으로 기여하였고, 후자는 이 감정이 노예무역 폐지를 위한 정치적 운동으로 변화되는 과정에 중요한 배경을 제시하였다. 이런 영국 반노예제 운동의 역사에 대한 이해 구조 속에서 볼 때반노예제 운동의 세 시기는 각각 다음의 세 가지 질문을 제기한다. 첫 번째로, 영어권 대서양 세계에서 노예무역과 노예제에 대한 반하는 감정과 가치가 어떻게 발전하고 확산되었는가. 둘째, 이 감정이어떻게 사회 개혁을 위한 정치적 사상으로 전환되었는가. 셋째, 어떻게 반노예제 운동가들이 노예무역 폐지와 노예 해방이라는 목표를 달성할 수 있었는가. 노예무역 폐지운동에 대한 연구는 노예무역 폐지운동 당시부터 지금에 이르기까지 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 많은 학자들에 의해 진행되어 왔다. 이런 연구들의 흐름을 살펴보면 “반노예제 운동가들이 어떻게 노예무역 폐지와 노예 해방이라는 목표를 달성할 수 있었는가”에 대한질문에서 “노예제에 대한 반감이 어떻게 반노예제 사상으로 발전하였는가”에 대한 질문으로 관심의 초점이 변화하고 있다고 평가할 수있다. 하지만 반노예제 사상의 전제가 되는 노예제에 대한 반감의 발흥과 확산 과정에 대한 질문은 여전히 충분히 답해지지 않았다. 본 연구는 대서양 복음주의 네트워크의 발전과정과의 종합적인 분석을 통해 이 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대안을 모색하고 있다. 이런 연구는 크게 대서양 복음주의 네트워크의 성립 입증 및 그것과 반노예제 감정의 확산과정의 상관관계 증명이라는 두 가지 과제를 가지고있다. 대서양 복음주의 네트워크의 성립 자체는 이제 많은 학자들에의해 인정되고 있지만, 이 네트워크가 어떻게 다른 정치, 종교적 발전과정과 연계를 맺고 있는지를 파악하기 위해서는 여전히 풀어야할 숙제가 많이 남아 있다. 따라서 이 연구 방향은 좀 더 시간을 두고 그성과를 검증해야할 필요가 있을 것이다.

The history of the antislavery movement in the British Atlanticworld can be categorized into three phases: the spread of theantipathy toward slavery(1730s~70s), the transformative change of theantislavery sentiment into the political conviction (1780s~90s) and thepolitical movement for the abolition of the slavery trade (1790~1807). Throughout the eighteenth century, the nature of the abolitionistmovement changed and two events were of great importance in thisprocess: the Great Awakening and the American Revolution. Theformer established the transatlantic communication channel for thespread of the antislavery sentiment into the Atlantic world while thelatter contributed to creating an atmosphere of tension, in whichantislavery sentiment became transformed into moral conviction. Each period of the abolitionist movement raises three questions andfor a comprehensive understanding of the history of the Britishantislavery movement, these should be answered: how values,perceptions and beliefs hostile to the slave trade and slaverydeveloped and spread in the British Atlantic world; how these ideastransformed into a political ideology and practical actions for socialreforms; and how abolitionists eventually achieved the abolition of theslave trade and the emancipation of slaves. Many studies have answered the second and third questions butinterest in the first has been limited; previous studies’ focus on thisissue has shifted from the abolitionists’ achievements to thetransformation of antislavery sentiment into the antislavery ideologyor abolitionism. However, in studies by scholars over the pastdecades, questions about the origins of the antipathy to the slave tradehave remained unexplained. This study attempts to find a proper answer to the question of theorigin of the antislavery sentiment through a more comprehensiveinterpretation of the developmental process of the transatlanticevangelical network. For this purpose, this essay has two objectives;the forging of the transatlantic evangelical network and the spread ofantislavery sentiment through this communication channel in theAtlantic world. It will also analyze the correlation between twoprocesses.
