칸트는 순수이성비판의 전반부에서는 사변적초월적 형이상학이 학으로 성립할 수 없음을 밝히고 있다. 그러나 실천이성비판에서는 사변적초월적 형이상학의 3대 주제인 영혼불멸, 신, 자유에 대해 실천형이상학의 이름으로 적극적인 주장을 펼치고 있다. 순수이성비판의 전반부와 실천이성비판에서의 칸트의 주장 간에는 건너기 힘든 갭이 있는 듯이 보인다. 순수이성비판의 후반부에서 다루어지고 있는 자유개념이 이 갭을 가로 질러 양자를 연결시켜주는 교량 역할을 한다는 것이 일반적으로 받아들여지는 해석이다. 그러나 이 자유의 다리가 양자 사이에 있는 갭을 가로질러 연결시켜줄 수 있을 정도로 충분히 튼튼한가 하는 것은 여전히 문제가 될 수 있을 것이다. 이런 문제의식 하에서 필자는 본 논문에서 우주론적 자유와 자율적 자유를 연결시키는 칸트의 논리가 과연 설득력이 있는지를 검토해보았다. 그 결과 칸트가 모종의 트리레마에 걸려 있음을 알게 되었다. 칸트는 제3이율배반의 해결을 통해 선험적 자유의 실재성을 증명했다고 말하면, 그 위에 건설되는 윤리학 체계가 허구 위에 건립될 가능성이 없어지지만, 그는 물자체 물가지론을 포기해야 한다. 만약 그가 물자체 불가지론을 고수하기 위해 제3이율배반의 해결을 통해 구출된 자유가 단지 이념으로서의 선험적 자유라고 한다면, 그는 그 자유 위에 윤리학의 체계를 건설할 수 없다. 만약 그가 윤리학을 허구의 가능성 위에 건설하게 되는 것을 방지하기 위해 선험적 자유와 실천적 자유의 연관성을 부정하고 실천적 자유는 경험을 통해 증명될 수 있다고 말한다면, 그는 자유란 본디 경험적 개념이 아니고 형이상학적 개념이라고 주장한 것과 모순을 일으킨다.

Kant proves that speculative-transcendental metaphysics such as Plato and modern rational metaphysicians had presented can't be a true science in the 'Analytic' of Critique of pure Reason. However he builds a new system of metaphysics in the Critique of practical Reason. There seem to be serious conflicts between these two positions. According to the standard interpretation, the concept of freedom takes a role of a connecting bridge between them. In this thesis, I examine this standard interpretation critically. My final conclusion is that Kant can't escape a trilemma. If Kant proved the reality of transcendental freedom through the solution of the third antinomy, a practical metaphysics built on it will not fall in the peril of groundless. In this case he must abandon the these that thing in itself is unknowable. If he wants to adhere the unknowablity these, he cannot but give up building a practical metaphysics having a firm ground. If he maintain that the reality of practical freedom can be proved through experience in order to prevent practical metaphysics hanging in the air without any ground, this contradict with his another conviction that freedom is not an empirical concept but a metaphysical concept.
