최첨단의 과학시대에 살고 있는 현대인들은 여전히 점성술에 의미를 부여하고 있다. 점성술은 반증가능성을 허용하지 않으며, 과학의 특징인 인간의 불완전성과 오류가능성을 인정하지 않는 대표적인 사이비과학이다. 점성술이 사람들에게 영향력을 행사하는 것은 과학에 대한 무지와 오해, 그리고 포러효과, 콜드리딩, 편향확증, 선택적 사고, 소망적 사고, 자기기만, 주관적 평가, 선후인과의 오류가 교묘하게 결합되어 있기 때문이다. 점성술사들이 사용하는 별점 자료는 현재의 별자리와는 전혀 다른 2000년 전의 엉터리 자료이다. 따라서 점성술로는 인간의 미래나 운명에 관한 어떤 합리적인 예측도 할 수 없다. 과학적인 원리나 방법과 전혀 상관없는 점성술은 결코 과학일 수 없다. 이런 사이비과학에 현혹되지 않으려면, 미지의 것에 대한 경이감을 잃지 않으며, 항상 회의적인 태도로 사물에 접근할 줄 알아야 한다. 또한 일부 매스컴의 무분별한 사이비과학에 대한 보도를 지양하고, 교육자들이 과학적 사고방식을 일상화할 수 있는 열린 과학교육을 할 경우에만, 점성술과 같은 미신적 요소로부터 해방되어, 참된 자유를 확보할 수 있을 것이다.
Modern people living in the most advanced scientific age are still giving astrology some meaning. Astrology does not permit falsifiability and is a representative pseudo-science that does not admit the human incompleteness and fallibility that are characteristics of science.The reason why astrology exercises an influence on people is people’s ignorance and misunderstanding about science and an intricate combination of The Forer effect, cold reading, confirmation bias, selective thinking, wishful thinking, self-deception, subjective validation, and post hoc reasoning.The constellation which modern astrologers are using for horoscopic data was made 2000 years ago, and is different from the one of today because the constellation has changed. Therefore, naturally, astrology cannot forecast the human futures and fates correctly, based on the wrong data.Astrology is not science by any means, for it is unrelated to a scientific principle or way at all. In order not to be deluded by this kind of pseudo-science, we should always observe and approach things with a critical and skeptic attitude.Only when mass media abstain from reporting indiscreet news about pseudo-sciences, and educators give an open education that makes scientific ways of thinking our everyday affairs, can we be freed from astrology as superstition, and secure freedom with the world.
