함경도 본풀이 <돈전풀이>는 자료 자체로 소중한 가치를 가진 본풀이이다. 선행 연구에서 이 본풀이의 존재 의의를 착안하지 않았다. 그 이유는 이 본풀이에 대한 정밀한 해독이 없어서이기도 했지만, 궁극적으로는 이 본풀이의 내용이 여러 민담의 복합적 특징을 드러내는 것이기 때문에 자료 전체에 대한 이해가 있어야 요해가 가능했기 때문이다. 이 본풀이는 내용상 평안도에 전승되는 <일월놀이푸념>과 동일한 것으로 굿에서 사용되는 돈전의 내력을 밝히는 것이다. 이 본풀이는 여러 가지 민담의 내용이 일부 또는 전부가 차용되면서 유형적인 복합을 이루는 것으로 근간에는 <우렁색시>유형 또는 <새털옷신랑>유형 등이 저변으로 작용하면서 다른 이야기를 확장적으로 활용하면서 본풀이의 내용을 구성하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 자료를 변형해서 가지고 있으므로 매우 긴요한 본풀이임이 확인된다. 이렇게 해서 얻은 결과는 우선 본풀이 자체의 이해에 기여하는 바가 크다. 본풀이의 소재적 원천은 고립되어 있는 독자적인 것이라고 보기 어렵다. 일반인들이 전승하는 이야기를 선택적으로 활용하면서 본풀이로 구성했을 가능성을 시사한다. 근본적으로 신화와 본풀이의 상관성을 해명하는데 일정한 기여를 한다. 아울러 본풀이와 민담의 상관성을 논하는 데 있어서 긴요한 구실을 할 것이다. 신화와 서사시는 근본적인 경계면이 있다. 이 경계면을 함경도 굿에서 어떻게 극복하고 본풀이와 이야기의 일반적 관계를 정립할 수 있는지 심각한 문제를 던져주는 자료이다. 본풀이 연구에서 필요한 것은 자료 작업이다. 이론적 작업이 무용하지 않지만 자료에서 근거한 것이라야 가치를 가진다. 총괄적인 일반이론을 구성하기 위해서라도 자료 작업은 지속적인 의의를 가지고 있으면서 나아가 자료가 말하는 자료학의 성과를 위해서도 <돈전풀이>는 비록 전승이 단절되었지만 앞으로 관찰되고 연구되어야 한다.
