본고는 일반적인 영웅신화의 주인공들에게서 요구되는 인간과는 다른 신이한 능력이나 전투를 통해 드러나는 영웅적인 행동들이 아니라, 한 사람의 인간으로서 갖추어야 할 미덕이라는 측면에서 남슬라브 민족 공통의 민중영웅인 마르코 끄랄례비치를 고찰한다. 마르코 끄랄례비치는 어린시절부터 가난하고 힘없는 민중들에 대한 애정을 보였으며, 그러한 애정과 사랑은 어머니와 아내에 대한 사랑으로 이어진다. 대부분의 남슬라브 지역 구비문학 작품들은 아버지와 마르코 끄랄례비치의 관계를 적대적인 관계로 묘사하고 있는데, 그러한 관계는 아들인 마르코에 의해 야기된 결과가 아니라는 점에서 마르코의 인간적인 미덕의 측면은 손상되지 않는다. 영웅은 그것이 드러내는 행위와 특성에 따라 다양하게 분류될 수 있으며, 그러한 영웅을 주인공으로 삼고 있는 영웅신화는 신화와 전설의 공통적인 층위에 걸쳐있다. 그러한 의미에서 세르비아 민족의 역사에 실재했던 인물이면서 민중들에 의해 신격화되고 있는 남슬라브 민족들의 공통적 민중영웅인 마르코 끄랄례비치는 영웅신화의 주인공이라고 할 수 있다. 마르코 끄랄례비치는 다양한 구비문학 작품들을 통해 때로는 군사영웅으로, 문화영웅으로, 종교영웅으로 우리들에게 다가온다. 그러나 그와 같은 분류에 반드시 추가되어야 할 것이 바로 ‘인간적인 영웅’으로서의 또 한 측면이다. 그가 지니고 있는 영웅성은 고대신화 속의 영웅과 중세신화 속의 영웅이 지니고 있는 특성들을 모두 포괄하고 있는데, 중세의 보편적 가치의 의미가 확대 재생산된 결과 ‘인간적 영웅’으로써의 면모가 특히 부각되었다고 할 수 있다.
Generally, we require supernatural abilities and heroic behaviors from the hero of a mythology, but this paper inquires into the common south slavic national hero, Marko Kraljevi, from the aspect of his human being character.Marko Kraljevi gave people in general a great affection from his boyhood, and his devotion and love to the people who are in poverty got connected to love toward his mother ‘Jevrosima’, and his wife ‘Jelena’. A great part of the south slavic oral literary works describe the relation between his father ‘Vukain’ and Marko Kraljevi by the hostility, but such relation is not caused by Marko Kraljevi. Therefore his aspect of human being character cannot be damaged.The heroic mythology can be classified by a behavior and a specificity that shows a hero in a literary work, and the heroic mythology that has such characters is located between a mythology and a legend. From that meaning, Marko Kraljevi who was in the actual serbian history(1331-1395) and who is the object of deification from the south slavic people so far, could be said the hero of the south slavic heroic mythology. Marko Kraljevi approaches to us sometimes like a military hero, a cultural hero, a religious hero by the oral literary work. But certainly, to this classification have to be added the aspect of ‘the hero like a human being’.
