Recently a variety of wooden and bamboo-strip artifacts were excavated in China, including a bamboo strip version of the Analects discovered in Nangnang (Ch: Lelang) in 2009 and a copy of the Hanjian excavated in Zhangjiashan of Jiangling County Hubei Province in 1983 and published in 2002. In part because of these discoveries, the study of ancient China has focused on excavated documents such as inscriptions on bamboo and wooden strip artifacts. Particularly,in the studies of Shang and Zhou dynasties, archaeological materials and inscriptions have been critically important as new discoveries in the history of ancient China rely on new artifact finds such as wooden and bamboo strips. A progression into deeper levels of research however is unlikely until a larger body of artifacts becomes available.
