The purpose of this study is to search and analyze the distribution of Haigakus existing in the south of Yamagata prefecture and make public their characteristics. In the south of Yamagata prefecture exist 77 pieces of Haigakus, and among them 49 pieces belong to Meiji era. The oldest Haigaku is one written in 1751, which exists in Ohnuma Ukishima Inari Shrine of Asahimachi. Their Haigakus include Haikus of famous haizins such as Chiyojo in Kaga and Ryota in Edo. Haigakus which are named as Haiku Wrestling still exist in Miyawaki Hachiman Shrine of in Kaminoyama city. Haigakus are usually hung on the wall in the frames, and in Yamagata City are Haigakus kept in the grid of the ceiling. Haigaku in Hukuda Myojin of Yamagata City was dedicated in 1856 at the end of Edo. When Haigakus were dedicated as Haigaku, 4 ryos were asked according to the those days’ currency. and the price is converted as 480,000 yen nowadays.
