The memory and imagination are two themes to which Shen Congwen gives more weight than the share of the experienced worlds in his prose. After he left his hometown, Xiangxi, he lived in the big cities a dozen years, and returned finally to Xiangxi, that is to say not the changes in the spatial position of the artist, but a dramatic shift of his historic standpoint. Xiangxi opens him, through the detailed portrayal of its natural scenery in search of the emotional care and beauty, a way of the artistic brilliance and multiplicity to compose his prose works, in contrast with the strong left-wing leaning of the contemporary Chinese literature. In the prose, he overcame the length restrictions of the traditional narration style by the transition of times and expressed his heaviness about the understanding history through the communion of the old and new times. As well, he shows an energetic pursuit and profound meditation of past, present and future of Xiangxi with a variety of free expressive techniques independently of the traditional frameworks and forms, and creates a new prose form that is fresh, full of the vitality and radiating an unseen artistic inspiration, opening up a new stage of Chinese contemporary prose.
