이 논문은 최인훈의 <구운몽>과 김만중의 <구운몽>에 드러난 환상성을 고찰하여 그 유사점과 차이점을 밝힘과 아울러 이 두 텍스트에 드러난 환상성의 기능을 짚어본 것이다. 김만중의 <구운몽>과 최인훈의 <구운몽>은 체계적이고 순차적인 서사 구조를 탈피하여 환상적 서사 구조를 보이고 있다는 점에서 공통적이다. 김만중의 <구운몽>은 선계와 인간계가 뒤바뀐 현실로 설정되어 있을 뿐만 아니라 꿈을 매개로 하여 서로의 세계가 열려 있고 이것은 되짚어 올라가면 결국 공(空)이라는 우주의 섭리로 귀착된다. 이것이 김만중이 이 작품 속에서 그려내고 싶어한 궁극적 지점이다. 최인훈의 <구운몽> 역시 단순히 미래와 현재의 시간의 전도만 일어난 것이 아니라 세 이야기의 층위가 인물과 상황이 서로 중첩되면서 끝까지 어느 것이 실제인지를 가늠하기가 힘들게 만들고 있다. 그러나 최인훈은 김만중과는 달리 궁극적 지점에서 현실 세계를 배제하지 않는다. 김만중의 <구운몽>과 최인훈의 <구운몽>은 꿈, 시공의 경계 해체, 주체의 분열 내지는 투사 등의 환상성의 표지들로 인하여 이질적 세계를 현실 세계에 틈입시켜 현실 세계의 인식 체계에 균열을 초래하면서 절대적 인식의 한계를 재고하게 한다. 그런데 이 둘의 차이점은 김만중의 <구운몽>은 갈등이 조화롭게 해결되면서 이상 세계의 모습을 환상적으로 실현하여 보여주는 것으로 현상적인 당대의 지배 이념에 대항했던 데 반해 최인훈의 <구운몽>은 현재의 부조리와 모순의 상황을 오히려 환상성을 통하여 적나라하게 보여주는 미래를 설정함으로써 그러한 현실에 대해 비판과 성찰의 거리를 확보하고 있다는 점이다.

These works differ in the method of expression though they have the sameness to be choosing the fantastic narration structure. Kuunmong of Kim Man Jung is revealing the fantasy through the method which reality is intersected with the dream to the compositeness. On the other hand, Kuunmong of Choi In Hun is expressing the fantasy in the method that is continued though severed like the film. The fantastic motives of these works are dream, removing the isolation of death and life, the overlap time and space and the projection of subject, etc. We can find the difference in the thing which the fantastic motives were represented by the view of world outlook of the writer. Consequently the role of fantasy of these two works is different. The fantasy of Kuunmong written by Kim Man Jung makes the people happy through an ideal realization. That of Choi In Hun makes us reflect and criticize reality.
