금원의 『湖東西洛記』는 여성 최초의 유람기이다. 여성의 외부 출입 자체가 용이하지 않았던 시기에 14살 여자 아이가 제천, 금강, 설악을 거쳐 한양에 이르는 긴 여정을 감당해 냈고, 그것을 기록으로 남겨 자신의 존재를 알리고자 했던 작품이다. 그러나 『湖東西洛記』를 조선 최초의 여성 유람기라는 단선적인 평가만으로 규정지을 수는 없다. 『湖東西洛記』 금원의 전세 열망에 의해 기획된 작품이기 때문이다. 금원은 단순히 이름을 남기는 것이 목적이 아니었다. 그녀는 오직 ‘문인’으로 기억되고자 했으며 자신의 목적을 이루기 위해 전략적인 글쓰기를 시도하고 있었다. 먼저 금원은 과거의 유람을 재해석 하고 의미를 부여하는 작업을 계속하였다. 금원은 자신의 의도에 맞게 유람을 결정하고 주도해 나가는 모습을 집중적으로 부각시키며 자기 주체성 내지는 자기 결정권을 가졌던 스스로를 강조하였다. 다음으로 금원은 자신의 신분이 확인되는 것을 은폐하려는 시도를 계속 하였다. 금원은 부모와 유년시절, 여정 중에 만난 수많은 인물들에 대해서 최대한 언급을 자제하였다. 그들과의 사적인 일화를 기록하는 과정에서 자신의 신분이 드러날 것을 우려했기 때문이다. 마지막으로 금원은 문인으로 전세되고 싶은 자신의 열망을 위해 삼호정에서의 시사 활동과 동료들에 대해 매우 구체적이고 상세한 설명을 덧붙였다. 삼호정 시사 동료들이 문인으로서의 자질을 갖추었고 그들과 활동했던 활발한 시회 활동을 기록함으로써 문인으로서 자신의 위상을 강조하고자 했던 것이다. 『湖東西洛記』는 이렇게 문인으로 전세되고자 했던 금원의 열망이 집약된 작품이었다.
‘Geumwon's ‘Hodongseolakgi' is the first travelogue written by a woman. It is a work created by a 14-year-old girl who traveled Jecheon, Geumgang, Seolak and Hanyang and recorded her journey to leave her traces in the period when women were not easily allowed to go outside. However, 'Hondongseolakgi' cannot be regulated only as the first travelogue written by a woman in the Joseon period. Her purpose was not only to leave her name to posterity but also to be remembered as a writer. To achieve her purpose, sha tried strategic writing. Geumwon kept continuing to reinterpret existing travelogues and impart a significant meaning. Geumwon emphasized her independency, intensively giving prominence to her initiative and determination for sightseeing according to her intention. In addition, Geumwon kept trying to conceal her identification being confirmed. She refrained from mentioning her parents, childhood and persons she met during her journeys because she worried that her identification may be revealed when recording episodes with them. In Conclusion, Geumwon concretely and precisely described her literary activities and companies in Samhojeong to be remembered as a writer. She tried to emphasize her status of writer by recording her literary activities with qualified companies of Samhojeong. ‘Hodongseolakgi' is a ‘Geumwon's work including her desire to be remembered as a writer.
