인류의 영원한 주제라 할 수 있는 性은 시․공간을 초월하여 다양한 예술의 형태로 꾸준히 표현되어 왔다. <주장군전>은 조선 전기의 문인 송세림이 지은 가전체 소설로, 男根을 의인화하여 性행위를 적나라하게 묘사한 파격적 작품이다. 특히 작품의 창작 시기가 성리학의 질서가 공고해진 16세기 초라는 점에서 매우 이례적이다. 이에 본고에서는 <주장군전>에 나타난 性담론의 특징과 의미를 탐색하였다. 첫째, <주장군전>의 형성 배경과 창작 동기를 살펴보았다. <주장군전>은 송세림의 소화집 『어면순』에 실린 작품이다. 특히 <주장군전>은 서거정의 『태평한화골계전』, 강희맹의 『촌담해이』, 채수의 <설공찬전>에 이어 창작되었다는 점에서 주목해야 한다. 이 작가들은 모두 귀족 계층인 사대부들이었고, 엄격한 유교적 윤리가 지배했던 시대에 살았기 때문이다. 송세림은 <주장군전>을 통해 인간에 내재한 성적 욕망을 가식 없이 드러내려 했다. 둘째, <주장군전>에 나타난 성담론의 특징을 살펴보았다. 송세림은 이 작품에서 과감하고 노골적인 표현형식으로 인간의 원초적 본능을 일깨우고 있다. 또한, 은유법과 중의법의 수사 기교를 통해 오락성을 극대화하였다. 특히 성행위와 관련하여 각 신체 부위를 비유적으로 표현한 언어유희는 당대의 금기를 깨뜨린 직설적이고 도전적인 표현방법이다. 이러한 해학적 내용을 통해 작가는 당대 사회를 비판하고 풍자했으며, 문학적 카타르시스를 보여주었다. 셋째, <주장군전>의 문학사적 의미를 살펴보았다. <주장군전>은 한국 최초의 창작 육담이다. 이 작품으로 인해, 이후 여성의 성기를 의인화한 <관부인전>이 탄생하기도 했다. 따라서 <주장군전>은 조선조 양반사회의 性적 관념과 태도를 엿볼 수 있는 희소성있는 작품이다.

Sexuality which can be said to be an eternal theme of humankind has been expressed constantly in a form of a variety of arts transcending time and space. <Joo Janggun Jeon> is a Korean novel personifying objects written by Song Se Rim who was a writer in the early Chosun Dynasty, and it is an unprecedented work in which man's symbol is personified to describe sexual act frankly. In particular, it is very exceptional in that the period of creation of the work is the beginning of the 16th century when the order of Neo-Confucianism became established. Accordingly, this paper explored the characteristics and meanings of sexuality discourse in <Joo Janggun Jeon>. First, the background of formation and motivations of creation of <Joo Janggun Jeon> were examined. <Joo Janggun Jeon> is a work contained in 『Eo Myun Soon』 which is Song Se Rim's jest book. Especially, <Joo Janggun Jeon> need to pay attention in that it was created following Seo Geo Jeong's 『Tae Pyung Han Hwa Gol Gye Jeon』, Gang Hee Maeng's 『Chon Dam Hae Yi』, Kim Si Seup's <Geum O sin Hwa>, and Chaesoo's <Seol Gong Chan Jeon>. It's because these writers were all noblemen who were aristocrats, and lived in an era when strict confucius ethics dominated. Song Se Rim attempted to frankly express sexual desire which was inherent in human beings through <Joo Janggun Jeon>. Second, the characteristics of sexuality discourse expressed in <Joo Janggun Jeon> were investigated. In this work, Song Se Rim is arousing basic instincts of humanity in a bold and explicit way of expression. In addition, he maximized amusement through rhetorical techniques of metaphors and ambiguous words. In particular, in relation to sexual behavior, plays on words which expressed each part of human body figuratively are methods of straightforward and challenging expression breaking taboo of the age. Through theses witty contents, the writer criticized and satirized society of the time, and displayed literary catharsis. Third, the meanings of <Joo Janggun Jeon> in history of literature were examined. <Joo Janggun Jeon> is the first licentious story in Korea. Because of this work, <Gwan Boo In Jeon> was also created later, which personified female sex organ. Thus, <Joo Janggun Jeon> is a work high in scarcity to see sexual ideas and attitudes of aristocratic circles in Chosun Dynasty period.
