이 글은 『독립신문』에 수록된 학문 관련 논설 및 기서, 지식 유통 관련 기사 등을 중심으로 근대적 학문 수용 과정과 국문 의식 성장이 갖는 의미를 규명하는 데 목표를 두었다. 이 시기의 신문은 사회 계몽의 수단일 뿐 아니라 근대적 지식을 보급하는 교과서로서의 역할도 담당하였다. 그렇기 때문에 근대 지식의 유통이나 학문 사상 발전 과정, 이로부터 파생하는 어문 문제의 성격을 규명하기 위해서는 『독립신문』에 선행하는 순보와 주보를 비롯하여 이 신문과 같은 시기에 발행된 신문이나 이보다 늦게 발행된 신문을 종합적으로 비교하는 작업이 필요하다. 이러한 차원에서 이 논은 『독립신문』의 학문 관련 개념적 지식을 담고 있는 논설이나 기사 53편을 학문 분야별로 분류하고, 각 자료에 등장하는 학문론의 특징과 국문 의식의 관계를 규명하고자 하였다. 이 논문에서 논의한 바를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 『독립신문』의 학문 사상은 ‘문명개화를 위한 학문의 필요성’, ‘신구학의 갈등과 신학문의 필요성’을 역설한 것들이 많았는데, 이는 순보와 주보의 객관적 서술 형태에서 사회 진화론적 관점에서 ‘문명개화’, ‘충군애국’을 기반으로 서구 학문을 수용하고자 하는 경향을 반영한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 『독립신문』 당시의 지식 유통 상황을 고려할 때, 이 신문에 등장하는 학문론이 서구 중심적이었던 이유는 『독립신문』에 소개된 지식들이 대부분 일본을 경유하여 들어온 것이라는 점과 무관하지 않다. 이 신문에 소개된 학문론이나 재일 유학생들의 글, 학회보와 관련된 기사 등을 종합해 볼 때, 『독립신문』의 학문 사상은 ‘서구 중심’, ‘신학문 추종주의’를 벗어나지 못한 한계를 갖는다. 셋째, 『독립신문』의 학문론이 시대적 한계를 갖고 있을지라도, 이 신문에 등장하는 ‘국문론’과 ‘국문 번역 문제’는 서구 중심의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 이 시기 형성된 어문민족주의는 국권 침탈기의 민족 담론 형성의 기반이 된 것으로 평가할 수 있다.
This paper aims to describe the arguments of scientific learning, which concerned with various language problems in the DOKRIPSINMUN(the Independent Newspaper). I surveyed the arguments and articles which concerned with scientific learning or accept of knowledges. I divided these materials into topic of science or theme. In this newspaper, many articles dealt with the need of modern science. In this time, many scholars divided science into new and old. The new science meaned the western knowledges that accepted went by way of Japan. On the contrary, old science meaned the traditional knowledges which were Confucianism. They thought old knowledges were not suitable in the modern time. They claimed that acceptance of new knowledge, because of Korea’s development and independence. But these ideas were based on the superiority of the West. And these ideas based on the civilization and social evolution theories of the West. The main language problems were translated into Korean alphabet and spreaded these knowledges. These problems developed the consciousness of Korean language were respectable. Linguistic nationalism were different with other scientific learning discussion. I think that the idea were developed nationalism after the independent newspaper.
