<용궁부연록>의 주인공 한생은 용왕의 초청을 받았다. 이는 여러 차례 세조의 부름을 받은 김시습과 닮아 있다. 용왕의 초청을 받고 간 한생이었지만, 그가 용궁에서 한 일은 그리 중요한 것이 아니었다. 그것을 안 한생은 그곳에 다시는 가서는 안 된다는 자각을 하고는 용궁을 떠나기로 한다. 그러나 용궁이 현실과 연결되어 있기 때문에 용왕이 자신을 다시 부를 수 있는 가능성이 크다. 이에 한생은 그러한 순환을 막기 위하여 세상을 등지고 산으로 들어간다. 김시습은 비록 자신이 부름을 받고는 있지만 한생과 마찬가지로 궁에서 특별한 일을 할 수 없을 것이라는 자각과 함께 궁과의 연결 고리를 끊기 위해서는 세상을 등질 수밖에 없다는 인식을 <용궁부연록>에 투영한 것이다. 요약하자면, 용궁을 설정하고 한생의 환상 체험을 서술한 <용궁부연록>은 어려서부터 문재(文才)로 명성이 있었던 김시습이 세조 정변 이후 궁궐의 부름에 대한 자신의 의식과 태도를 함축적으로 드러낸 작품이다.
The hero of Yonggungbuyeonrok, Hansaeng, was invited by the Dragon King, which suggested Kim Si-seup, who had been called by Sejo of Joseon several times. Though invited by the Dragon King, Hansaeng didn’t assume important duties. When he realized it, he decided to leave the palace of the Dragon King, telling himself not to come back. However, the palace of the Dragon King was linked with the real world, so the Dragon King could always call him again. To avoid such a repetition, he headed for a mountain, turning his back on the world. Kim Si-seup reflected his awareness that he couldn’t but renounce the world to sever the link between him and the palace realizing that he couldn’t take an important role in the palace even though called by the king upon his work. To sum up, Yonggungbuyeonrok, which described Hansaeng’s illusory experience in the palace of the Dragon King, is the work in which the author showed his opinion and stance on the call from the palace after Sejo’s coup.
