이 글은 서찬규의 생원진사시와 문과 도전의 과정을 추적한 것이다. 그가 얼마나 위 두 시험에 성공하려고 했는지, 그 노력의 모습은 어떠하였는지를 살펴보았다. 서찬규는 조선 후기 경상도 대구 지방에 살던 향반(鄕班)으로서 어느 정도의 경제적인 여유는 있었지만 한미한 가문의 출신으로서 양반의 지위까지 위협받을 수도 있는 처지에 놓여 있었다. 그리하여 그는 20세를 전후한 시기부터 소과와 문과의 문을 두드리기 시작하였다. 서찬규는 생원시라고 하는 소과에는 어렵지 않게 합격하는 행운을 누렸다. 그는 헌종 11년(1845) 생애 처음으로 응시한 소과 초시에 합격했고 이어 그 다음해인 헌종 12년(1846) 서울에서 실시한 회시에 당당히 합격함으로써 비로소 진사의 칭호를 획득하였다. 그의 집안에서 소과 합격자가 나오기는 무려 수백 년 만에 처음 있는 일이었다. 따라서 그의 소과 합격은 서찬규 본인은 물론이고 혹은 집안에도 대단히 영광스러운 일이었다. 그의 소과 합격을 축하하기 위한 잔치가 오랜 기간 지속되었다는 사실만으로도 그 점은 알 수가 있다. 하지만 서찬규의 진짜 꿈은 소과가 아니라 문과였다. 소과 합격만 가지고는 기울어진 자신의 집안을 일으킬 수 없고 관직에 나아가 자신의 포부를 펼 수도 없었기 때문이다. 따라서 그는 소과에 합격했던 바로 그해 말부터 문과에 도전하기 위한 기나긴 여정을 시작한다. 서찬규는 문과에 급제하기 위해 수많은 시험에 도전하였다. 그러나 그는 언제나 실패만 할 뿐이었다. 그에게 문과는 너무도 운이 없었던 것이다. 이에 서찬규는 철종 5년(1854)을 끝으로 더 이상 문과에 대한 미련을 가지지 않게 된다. 대신 자식들이 과거에 성공할 수 있도록 많은 도움을 주면서, 본인은 현실 문제의 해결에 필요한 실용학문에 눈을 돌리며 나름대로 큰 업적을 쌓는다.
In this paper I have focused my interest on the process of Seo, Chan- kyu(徐贊奎)’s challenge for the Small Royal Examination(小科) and Royal Examination(文科). Especially I have tried to figure out how much he had struggled hard to succeed in these two Examination, and what was the feature of his constant efforts. Seo, Chan-kyu was a intellectual man of Daegu(大邱) city in the late of Choseon Dynasty. He was some rich but his lineage went down for a long time, so he must passing the Royal Examination to restore the family fortunes. For this he have taken his first step to approach above two Exam around his 20 ages. It was not so hard for Seo, Chan-kyu to pass the Small Royal Examination. In 1846 he got the JinSa(進士) title at one go. In his lineage for a couple of hundred years there was no one who passed the Small Royal Examination. So his title was an honor to him and his family. Because of this he had performed party so many times. But the Small Royal Examination was not his final Goal. To rebuild his declined family and enter government service he must pass the Royal Examination. And then he began the long and hard journey to it at the end of 1846. He had taken Royal Examination so many times but only failed to. First of all he had no luck on it. So in 1854 he gave up his challenge for it. Instead of that he took care of his son's road to success. And he had engrossed in practical learning and got the great fame in it.
