안성판방각본은 경판 완판과 더불어 우리나라 방각본(坊刻本)의 3대 판본으로 일컬어진다. 아울러 최근 들어서 고전국문학, 서지문헌학, 판본출판학 등 관련 분야의 여러 연구자들이 관심을 갖고 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 특히 미발견본을 포함하여 20여 종을 헤아리는 비소설류 판본은 차치하더라도, 최대 14종 17판본으로 추정되는 안성판방각본 고전소설은 완판이나 경판과는 다른 이판으로서의 희소가치를 갖고 있으며, 판본 연구나 텍스트 분석 등에서 국문학 연구의 기초자료로 주목되는 값진 자산이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 현재까지 안성판방각본의 기원과 유래를 밝혀 보인 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 안성지역은 전통적으로 사실상 인쇄출판의 불모지나 다름없는 지역이다. 그러함에도 불구하고 ‘방각의 시대’라 할 수 있는 조선 후기에 들어서 『춘향전』을 위시한 십수 종의 고전소설을 방각본으로 찍어냈다. 이로부터 비롯된 출판문화가 안성지역에서 화려하게 만개한 것은 사막에서 장미꽃이 피어난 것과 진배없는 일이다. 인쇄출판의 전통이 미미한 지역의 환경에서 어떻게 19세기 후반 어간에 이르러 고전소설들을 방각하기 시작했는지, 그 계기가 무엇이었는지 지금까지 전혀 규명된 바가 없다. 상리(商利)에 밝은 중상주의적 기풍과 수공업이 흥융한 안성지역의 문화전통이 일정 부분 작용한 점을 부인할 수 없으나, 그것만으로 안성판방각본의 출현을 설명하기에는 뭔가 부족한 게 분명하다. 이 글이 안성판방각본의 개판 기원으로써 역서(曆書)의 인출 전통을 추적한 것은 그런 의문으로부터 출발한 것이다. 따라서 이 글은 안성판방각본의 남상(濫觴)이 지방판 역서의 인출 전통에서 기인했음을 입증하기 위해 여러 문헌과 기록, 증언을 검토해 상고했고, 이를 체계화하고자 했다. 그런 측면에서, 후행 연구자들이 안성판방각본의 전 면모를 고구 추찰하고자 할 때 매우 유용하게 참조 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Korean old books unofficially printed with wood blocks by private local publishers for sale are known as Banggakbon. Majority of them encompasses popular novels for the masses and textbooks for children. In Late Joseon dynasty books printed by means of banggak (publishment without permission from government) are different from others in that they were published by local, nongovernmental publishers. Three major kinds of Korean banggakbon include ones printed in Seoul, Jeonju and Anseong. This article is on some aspects of, especially on origin of the Anseongpan‒Banggakbons (books privately printed in Anseong region). Tracing to their history the paper argues that they have their root in publishing traditional calendars. The Anseongpan‒Banggakbons were mainly produced between the late 19th C. and early 20th C. Anseong region scarcely have had publishing practices through the late Joseon dynasty but there have been some in the Goryeo and early Joseon dynasty. Referring to local documents and literature the author tries to proof the fact that publishers and printers in old Anseong have begun producing banggakbons after or simultaneously they printed calenders for sale. Printing calendars without permission from government was illegal and severely punished but, according to documents from a local historiographer, for some reasons,they have informally done it. With years of experience and a dedication to the craft, printers and engravers in old Anseong have managed to publish banggakbons to provide them to the neighboring towns. The time and circumstances in which calendars and banggakbons were produced in Anseong region are main researches of the paper.
