Intercultural communication, or the process whereby messages are transmitted from one culture to another, is a consequence of the translation exercise. When film and drama, an excellent multidimensional medium with which to send such messages, is translated, the translator is challenged in many ways. The subtitled DVD version of the popular Korean historical drama, Dae Jang Geum, will be studied to determine the effectiveness of the intercultural communication that took place. Using a drama that is as rich in historical and cultural connotations as the source text, and the English subtitles of the DVD as the target texts, the analysis will focus on references selected from certain excerpts of the drama that best depict Korean history and culture. The translation strategies of the culture-specific items and references that appear in the subtitles will then be compared and judged as to whether or not their translation into English has been effective.
