The purpose of this study is to determine whether subtitlers increase or decrease the intensity of sex and violence as represented in STs. Two major forces are at work for subtitlers when they deal with sex and violence: legal environment and professional practices. But, with legal regulations being not tough and professional practices not so binding, it is generally up to individual subtitlers to decide how much sex and violence is represented in their TTs. Based on the corpus of 12 Hollywood movies from three different genres, the results of the study show that only the most intensive of sexual and violent expressions are filtered while others of lesser degrees are just past through to or even intensified in TTs. Based on the study findings this study proposes a more active role played by relevant authorities in making film subtitles less vulgar and violent.
